Job Summary
Reporting to the Administrative Director, and partnering closely with the CI Department Medical Director,
the Assistant Director, Continuous Improvement (CI) will lead a team of Improvement Advisors in the
application of UCSF CI methodologies to standardize practices, advance a learning health system mindset,
and improve efficiency across UCSF Health.
In support of patient-centered care and advanced high reliability in healthcare, the Assistant Director will
collaborate with nursing and physician leaders, quality and patient experience business partners, and other
professional personnel to deploy resources to support improvement work, coach A3 thinking efforts and
facilitate the spread of best practices in quality, safety, experience, and efficiency.
Has a solid understanding of organizational development, effectiveness, and strategic planning. Manages
professional-level staff and projects, and assumes responsibility for the quality of work produced by
organizational consultant staff. Establishes objectives and determines how to use resources to meet
schedules and goals. Guides subordinates within the latitude of established organization
policies. Recommends changes to policies and establishes procedures that affect the immediate organization.
Assists with establishing goals and objectives in support of organizational effectiveness. Receives
assignments in the form of objectives and determines how to use resources to meet schedules and goals.
Reviews and approves recommendations for functional programs. Guides subordinates to
achieve goals by established policies. Erroneous decisions or failure to achieve goals
results in additional costs and personnel, and serious delays in overall schedules.
Department Description
The UCSF Health Continuous Improvement Department (CI) supports and facilitates the transformation of
UCSF Health into a Lean enterprise. The CI partners with administrative, operational, and clinical leaders
across UCSF to solve strategic organizational problems, reinforce a culture of continuous process
improvement, and innovate care delivery. This is achieved through developing our people to be fully
competent in Lean principles, behaviors, and tools that enable frontline problem solving to optimize
quality, value, and service delivery. The CI is an internal organizational resource and serves a role in
developing emerging and established leaders to support their career pathways.
