ASSISTANT DIRECTOR, OPERATIONS & OUTREACH

The Multicultural Initiatives Manager (Business Title: Assistant Director, Operations and Outreach) is an integral member of the Multicultural Student Center (MSC) staff, primarily responsible for overseeing a diverse portfolio of programmatic initiatives and partnerships that support students of color in their co-curricular involvement and leadership development.
The Manager coordinates outreach efforts that support students of color’s success, sense of belonging, and retention, including collaboration with admissions, orientation, first-year experience, academic and career advising, and alumni offices. The Manager supervises two full-time staff members, one responsible for student organization support and one responsible for MSC space reservations, front desk services, and supervision of 12 student interns. The Manager also supervises a team of 3-4 interns responsible for communications (graphic design, web, and social media) and multicultural programming.
Together with their staff, the Manager develops, executes, and assesses culturally relevant programs that affirm identity, build community, and strengthen the capacity of students of color and allies to learn, lead and thrive at UW-Madison.

• 10% Assists in the development and implementation of student multicultural programs
• 20% Identifies, promotes, and maintains internal partnerships to coordinate institutional diversity efforts and initiatives
• 20% Facilitates cross unit recruiting efforts for student, faculty, and staff involvement to raise awareness and involvement in multicultural programming
• 20% Designs, delivers, and evaluates interventions, programs and services for underrepresented students
• 10% Advises students and community stakeholders in building sustainable coalitions, organizations, and/or movements
• 10% Supervises two full-time staff: Organizational Development Specialist (supports multicultural student organizations) and Operations Coordinator (oversees MSC space reservations and supervises front desk interns).
• 10% Supervises 3-4 communications interns and oversees MSC website, newsletter and social media accounts.

• Administers student hiring process, creates position descriptions, manages $78,000 student staffing budget including pay rates and raises. Serves as liaison to student employment /Human Resources office.
• Provides administrative oversight and support for two full-time direct reports, including budget reconciliation, contracts, and major purchases.
• Creates and assess learning outcomes for MSC internship. Co-leads MSC intern trainings and meetings.
• Coordinates drop-in services, outreach requests (tabling, panels, tours), and general MSC partnerships (Badgers Vote Coalition, Wisconsin Foundation and Alumni Association, career services offices).
• Serves as primary liaison to Office of Admissions and Recruitment, SOAR (Student Orientation and Registration), and CFYE (Center for the First-Year Experience).

Required
Bachelor’s Degree
from an accredited college or university. Preferred degree areas: higher education / student affairs, social justice education, or closely related areas.

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
Minimum 3 years of full-time professional experience with a Bachelor’s Degree or 2 years of full-time professional experience with a Master’s Degree. Acceptable professional experience areas: multicultural student services and programming, student activities and leadership, residential life, multicultural community development and education, social justice education.
Minimum Qualifications:
– Demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to diversity, inclusion, equity, and social justice
– Theoretical and practical understanding of student development, racial identity development, intersectionality, and complexity of social identities
– Experience supervising professional staff
– Proven record of strong program planning, coordination, and organization skills
– Strong communication skills (written, oral, and electronic)
Preferred Qualifications:
– Proven ability to manage multiple projects with complex logistics, including the successful management and supervision of multiple facilities and staff
– Ability to foster collaborative networks and partnerships to benefit students
– Ability to facilitate identity-based dialogue groups, programs, and workshops
– Capacity to make difficult decisions quickly and flexibility to handle multiple competing priorities

Full Time: 100%
This position may require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely at an offsite, non-campus work location upon supervisor and department/Student Affairs division approval.
