Position Title ASSISTANT DIRECTOR/OFFICE OF CIVIL RIGHTS & INSTITUTIONAL EQUITY
Position Summary The Assistant Director reports to the Executive Director of Civil Rights and Institutional Equity and Title IX Coordinator. The Assistant Director is responsible for receiving, conducting, and leading prompt, thorough, and impartial investigations of all reported cases of harassment, discrimination, sexual and gender-based misconduct, and/or retaliation arising under the University’s Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action Protocol and the University’s Sexual and Gender-Based Misconduct Policy. The Assistant Director is responsible for working with the Executive Director in reviewing and updating standard protocols for investigations, including communication with the parties, communication with other relevant personnel, documentation of investigative work and other investigative procedures. The position requires knowledge of federal and state affirmative action, equal employment, and educational opportunity laws and policies, including but not limited to Titles VI and VII of the Civil Rights Act and Title IX of the Educational Amendments, the Americans with Disabilities Act, Section 503/504 of the Rehabilitation Act, the Age Discrimination Act, the Vietnam Era Veterans’ Readjustment Assistance Act, the Violence Against Women’s Reauthorization Act, and the Elliott Larsen Civil Rights Act. The Assistant Director also helps design and conduct effective trainings and educational opportunities on the concepts of harassment, discrimination, and sexual misconduct. The Assistant Director also assists in the implementation and monitoring of the University’s Affirmative Action program and reviewing, writing, and revising University policies, procedures, and reports.
Required Qualifications Bachelor’s degree.
Three years of professional work experience leading prompt, thorough, and impartial equal employment, affirmative action, and/or sexual and gender-based misconduct investigations.
Three years of professional experience preparing and providing effective trainings and/or educational opportunities on the concepts of harassment, discrimination, sexual harassment, or related fields.
Comprehensive knowledge of equal opportunity, affirmative action, and educational policies, laws, and regulations, including but not limited to Titles VI and Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, Title IX of the Educational Amendments, Section 503/504 of the Rehabilitation Act, the Age Discrimination Act, the Vietnam Era Veterans’ Readjustment Assistance Act, the Violence Against Women’s Reauthorization Act, Elliott Larsen Civil Rights Act, and any other federal or state anti-discrimination law or regulation.
Experience with computer applications, word processing, and presentation programs.

Preferred Qualifications Master’s degree and/or terminal degree in higher education, student affairs, or similar field. Juris Doctorate (J.D.).
Higher education experience.
Civil Rights and/or Title IX investigator certificates.
Supervisory experience.
Demonstrated experience working with an affirmative action plans. Demonstrated experience working in a collective bargaining environment.
Demonstrated experience writing policies and procedures.
Knowledge of personnel practices.
Experience tracking complaints and investigations.
Duties & Responsibilities Receives, conducts, and leads prompt, thorough, and impartial investigations of all reported cases of harassment, discrimination, sexual/gender-based misconduct, and/or retaliation arising under the University’s Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action Protocol and the University’s Sexual and Gender-Based Misconduct Policy.
Works with the Executive Director in reviewing and updating standard protocols for investigations, including communication with the parties, communication with other relevant personnel, documentation of investigative work and other investigative procedures.
Monitors all federal and state regulations regarding equal opportunity, affirmative action, Title VI and VII of the Civil Rights Act, Title IX of the Education Amendments, the Americans with Disabilities Act, Section 503/504 of the Rehabilitation Act, the Age Discrimination Act, the Vietnam Era Veterans’ Readjustment Assistance Act, the Violence Against Women’s Reauthorization Act, Elliott Larsen Civil Rights Act, and any other federal or state anti-discrimination law or regulation; stays current regarding new laws and regulations to maintain university compliance; and advises the Executive Director of the Office of Civil Rights and Institutional Equity.
In conjunction with the Executive Director, helps develop programs and provides training (forums, workshops, speakers, and activities) related to issues such as: affirmative action, diversity, discrimination, equal employment, harassment, and sexual misconduct.
Assists the Executive Director in reviewing, writing, and/or revising university policies, procedures, and reports.
Assists Executive Director in responding to questions and requests for information to maintain compliance with Federal and State laws and regulations.
Assists the Executive Director in collecting data, preparing reports, monitoring, and updating the University’s Affirmative Action program, and reviews and meets with appropriate personnel about the Affirmative Action program.
Assists the Executive Director with Senior Officer searches (posting, recruitment, targeting resources, monitoring pools, waivers, interview questions, and justifications).
In conjunction with the Executive Director, performs special projects, prepares reports and surveys for the President’s Office, the Provost, or other executive officers, as requested.
Prepares, edits, and monitors Affirmative Action, Equal Opportunity, and Sexual and Gender-Based Misconduct publications, training materials, op-ed news articles, advertisements, and the department website.
Assists Executive Director in supervising student staff on a daily basis.
Performs other duties as assigned.
