Position Summary
The Assistant Director of Substance Misuse Prevention is a key position in the Prevention Service unit within the Office of the Dean of Students. The University is committed to providing a comprehensive, evidence-based substance abuse prevention and collegiate recovery program that empowers students to make healthy choices, reduces their risks and the negative consequences associated with alcohol and other drugs, increases their protective factors and behaviors associated with high-risk drinking, and increases their understanding of the connection between substance abuse and future success. The Assistant Director of Substance Misuse Prevention leads the campus efforts to apply evidence-based prevention programs, practices, and a comprehensive, multifaceted approach that targets individuals (including at-risk, or alcohol-dependent drinkers), the student population, and the university and surrounding community.
The Assistant Director, Substance Misuse Prevention is responsible for directing, assessing, and evaluating programs, services, and activities related to the prevention of substance misuse by University of Oregon students, as required by the US Department of Education Drug-Free Schools and Campuses Act (DFSCA). The Assistant Director also provides leadership and direction in planning, implementing, and evaluating theory, evidence-based, and informed health promotion and prevention strategies, programs, and services to address substance misuse and collegiate recovery.
This position reports to the Director of Prevention Services and supervises the Substance Abuse Prevention Coordinator.
Minimum Requirements
• Master’s degree.
• Two years direct experience in prevention programming within an institution of higher education, which included experience creating and implementing alcohol and other drug prevention programs for young adults.
• Experience supervising professional staff and/or student staff.

• Ability to utilize relevant theories and make data-driven decisions.
• Competence in substance misuse prevention efforts including utilization of evidenced-based initiatives effective for college students.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills including report writing.
• Excellent teaching, facilitation, and training skills.
• Interpersonal skills and ability to build and sustain collaborative relationships with students and campus and community partners.
• Organizational and time management skills, including setting priorities and achieving program and department goals, and performing multiple work assignments simultaneously with acute attention to detail.
Preferred Qualifications
• Master’s degree in public health, prevention science, college student personnel, student affairs administration, higher education administration, or counseling-related field.
• 3-5 years of professional experience beyond graduate school related to duties/responsibilities of this position. Health Promotion and Wellness experience desired.
• Experience with recovery in higher education and peer-delivered settings.
• Demonstrated ability in building and sustaining successful coalitions and committees that focus on substance abuse prevention efforts.
• Demonstrated experience in applying theory and best practices to prevention efforts, including but not limited to health promotion theory, harm reduction, behavior change models, population-based theories and models, environmental management strategies, and the ecological model.
• Demonstrated ability to design health promotion programs that meet the needs of a multicultural college student population.
• Experience in grant writing and/or executing grant-funded initiatives.
• One year of experience supervising professional staff and/or student staff.
• Extensive knowledge of current/emerging college alcohol and other drug issues, prevention strategies, collegiate recovery, intervention methods, health behavior change theories, and evidence-based practice.
• Experience delivering BASICS and other evidence-based substance misuse prevention programs for individuals and groups.
• Training and experience in Motivational Interviewing.
• Demonstrated ability in core areas of assessment, program planning, and evaluation.
• Desire and ability to participate in other initiatives on priority wellness issues as data and needs dictate.
• Excellent computer skills; MS Office Suite proficiency; comfort with learning new software/platforms.
