Primary Purpose of Position The primary purpose of this position is to maintain and process the Health Insurance Program for the Student Health Center. The position is assigned to the Billing and Insurance office of SHC to facilitate insurance claims processing for services obtained at the Student Health Center. This position converses primarily with students regarding health insurance, insurance companies, SHC staff, Students account office, the Office of International programs, and other departments on campus. The position may assist with the student health insurance enrollment/waiver process and may assist with uploads from the SHI administrator to UNCC student accounts. This position will assist with assessment, data analysis and provide recommendations to Associate Director on fee structure for student health.
Minimum Education/Experience Required Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree and one year of experience related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
University Preferred Qualifications:
Graduation from a four-year college or university and at least three years of program associate experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Essential Job Duties
  • Manage and process claims for billing according to governmental regulations, review unpaid/denied claims to determine trends and address root causes, and process payments and electronic remittances.
  • Provide insurance education, training, and customer service to inquiries regarding insurance by phone, email, and other written correspondence and in person.
  • Responsible for credentialing staff, managing of Medicaid program, or working closely with providers to ensure quality assurance in coding practices.
  • Supervise the Insurance Coordinator.
Other Work Responsibilities
  • Assist with the Student Health Insurance plan enrollment and waiver process.
  • Provides data for analysis as needed by supervision.
  • Serves on SHC committees and work groups as needs arise.
Departmental Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
  • Two years of experience in a medical office or medical insurance company processing insurance claims for services rendered; or medical insurance experience in a higher education setting.
  • Medical coding experience and/or graduated/certified from a medical coding course.
  • Experience with Electronic Medical Records.
  • Proficient with computers and software including similar programs to Excel, Medicat, and other databases.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office including Excel.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills.
  • University Setting.
