The Cornell Peter and Stephanie Nolan School of Hotel Administration at Cornell University is the premier school for hospitality education in the world. The Office of Student Services (OSS) serves as an essential nexus between the Hotel School’s students and its faculty and staff, overseeing all aspects of the student experience. The Student Services team is responsible for academic advising and student support for approximately 950 undergraduate and 130 professional students for the Nolan School of Hotel Administration. This group encompasses Undergraduate Advising, Graduate Programs, the Registrar’s Office, Diversity & Inclusion, as well as Student Activities & Events.

The Assistant Director of Advising & Student Development Opportunity:             

Reporting to the Director of Student Services within the Office of Student Services (OSS), the Assistant Director advises a diverse body of undergraduate students on academic requirements and procedures, provides support for students facing a variety of moderately complex institutional and personal issues, connects students to appropriate resources on campus to foster student success, and advocates the needs of individual students and groups of students. Working with the OSS Advising team, this role participates in assessment processes, provides professional advising support for orienting new students, and supports School, College and University initiatives on retention, persistence, and graduation.

The Assistant Director also contributes to the creation and implementation of co-curricular programming designed to contribute to a sense of community, which helps to create an exceptional and inclusive student experience for students of different cultural, geographic, socioeconomic backgrounds and lived experiences.  These programs may include, but are not limited to Pre-enrollment sessions, Commencement, New Student Orientation, First-Year Family Weekend, and the Academic Success Program.

In addition, the Assistant Director may assume other OSS administrative responsibilities as necessary and assigned, such as school wide committees that assess relevancy of existing policies and makes recommendations for improvement.  The position requires collaboration with departments within and outside the Nolan Hotel School (e.g., Admissions, Cornell Health, Global Learning, and Student Disability Services).

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • 2 to 4 years of experience or equivalent working with students in a higher education setting. 
  • Candidates for the position must demonstrate sound judgement, creativity, problem-solving, and the ability to work independently, within a team of professionals. 
  • They must have demonstrated experience with diverse student populations, and an appreciation for and understanding of a selective research university. 
  • They must have a desire to work closely with students using proven student development theory/techniques. 
  • Must be available to work occasional nights and weekends to support program goals.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree preferred.
  • Two years of experience in a higher education setting.

This position is a full-time position based in Ithaca, NY, and is eligible for benefits. Hiring salary may be up to $67,000, depending on education, experience and relevant skills. No visa sponsorship and no relocation assistance are available for this position.
