Assistant Director of Academic Success

The University of Virginia’s College at Wise invites applications for an Assistant Director of Academic Success. This position will report directly to the Director of Academic Success. The Assistant Director will participate in creating and ensuring the effective operation of a new Academic Success Center as a major expansion of Student Support Services on campus. The Assistant Director will be a student-facing member of the Academic Success Center and will work directly with students, faculty, and staff to coordinate student support efforts that improve student retention and graduation rates.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Student Academic Support
- Review student academic needs and develop individualized comprehensive action plans
- Participates in weekly meetings with the Director regarding students experiencing academic difficulty and follows up with students to coordinate services.
- Counsel students and execute intervention programs for students on Academic Warning, Probation, and Suspension
- Supervises, improves, and maintains systems developed to assist all students, including those on academic warning/probation/suspension.
- Execute academic success programming to meet the needs of diverse learners
- Coordinate with other student support services offices, including but not limited to, Registrar, Financial Aid, Admissions, TRIO, Disability Services, and the Writing Center
- Collaborate with the First-Year Experience Program (New Student Advising Corps, First Year Success Seminar, etc.) to promote student success
Administrative Actions
- Recruit and train peer educational leaders, such as peer tutors
- Other duties as required
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor’s degree in higher education, counseling, education, or related field
- Master’s degree preferred
- Experience working in higher education or related experience
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
- Knowledge of current principles, practices, and trends in higher education relating to academic success programming
- Knowledge of applicable, federal, and state laws and regulations
- Ability to apply legal and policy standards
- Excellent oral, and written communication skills
- Excellent ability to clearly communicate ideas and recommendations
- Strong organizational skills in handling, directing, and prioritizing multiple and complex assignments/projects
- Effective supervisory, counseling, interpersonal and leadership skills
- Ability to teach learning skills and present training programs to a wide variety of groups
- Computer literacy
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and act with professionalism, sensitivity, and neutrality
- Ability to use appropriate judgment when making decisions and recommendations
- Must be able to competently interact with a diverse population of students, faculty, and staff

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
