Job Summary

Under the supervision of a Principal Investigator (PI), the individual will perform entry-level duties related to the support and coordination of clinical studies and may receive training and development to prepare and advance for journey-level work at the next level within the series.

May be responsible for the coordination of one or more single or multi-site, active or follow-up clinical trials; help prepare protocols for study initiation; help design flow sheets, data forms and source documents; gather and interpret medical, surgical and laboratory data regarding clinical trial subjects; may apply understanding of inclusion/exclusion eligibility criteria for protocols; help recruit, consent, enroll, register, schedule and retain study subjects; record protocol specific treatments and assure collection and shipment of samples; assist research personnel to keep patients on study schedules; complete study forms to submit to sponsors and/or appropriate agencies; collect, enter and clean data into study databases, maintaining data quality; assist with data analysis; assist with preparation of reports and tables; attend team meetings; and perform other duties as assigned.

This position will support the GAIN project, an evaluation study investigating the effectiveness of contingency management delivered using a digital platform and phone app. The individual will be involved in screening and interviewing potential study participants, scheduling and conducting study visits according to the protocol, data collection, as well as supporting data management. The individual is expected to be highly proficient with technology, have experience using an Android and/or iPhone, and be able to troubleshoot issues involving these platforms. The individual will provide training on general mobile phone use and the usage of the digital contingency management study app to housing insecure clients dealing with substance use disorders and criminal justice involvement. They will develop long-term, working relationships with participants over the course of the study, schedule and attend recurring study visits and guide clients through the protocol with help from a more experienced research or clinical staff member. They will conduct behavioral interviews and assessments related to sensitive topics such as a mental illness and drug use. Incumbent must therefore be comfortable and interested in working with this high complexity/acuity population. Due to the complex nature of the protocol and patient population, incumbents are expected to possess superior attention to detail and follow-up skills, as well as the ability to interact with clients in a respectful and empathetic manner. A familiarity with coding/app development is helpful, but not required. The individual will also assist with urine drug testing of participants, thus should be comfortable with handling human urine specimens (relevant training and protective equipment will be provided). 

Note: A physical/health screening is required for this position.

Department Description

The Division of Citywide Case Management Programs at UCSF/ZSFG, Department of Psychiatry is located at multiple locations, though the main clinic location is 982 Mission Street, San Francisco. The Division provides comprehensive outpatient treatment to those suffering from severe mental illness, often complicated by homelessness, chronic trauma, institutionalization, substance use disorders and chronic medical conditions. Our mission is to help clients recover prior functioning, while reducing reliance on acute services, and facilitate transitions from ZSFG psychiatric inpatient, jails, or other institutions to the community. Our programs serve a diverse group of individuals, in terms of social, cultural, and linguistic characteristics, and are structured around interdisciplinary teams. Interventions provided include psychotherapy, crisis intervention, psychotropic medication management, case management, outreach, and employment services.

Required Qualifications

  • HS graduation; sufficient experience and demonstrated skills to successfully perform the assigned duties and responsibilities or equivalent experience/education.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications and presentation skills; excellent organizational skills; and excellent interpersonal skills to work effectively in a diverse team.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint,  Windows.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, team-based environment; project management and coordination skills; ability to prioritize tasks and meet multiple deadlines on concurrent projects.
  • Ability to establish cooperative working relationships with patients, co-workers,& physicians.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated proficiency with medical terminology
  • Experience working with patients or study subjects
  • Ability to abstract data from medical records and transfer it to data collection forms or directly into databases
  • Medical Device and computer systems experience
  • Proficiency with Redcap
  • Willing to work flex time
  • Experience with electronic medical records
  • Knowledge of UCSF and departmental policies and guidelines for research, confidentiality and HIPPA regulations, following the UCSF mission statement and purpose for research, and a clear understanding of policies and procedures on patient safety and confidentiality (electronic and hard copy medical records, patient charts, communication, etc.); knowledge of medical terminology, research policies and guidelines, guidelines for packing/shipping infectious substances.

    • CHR regulations for recruitment and consent of research subjects
