Assistant Clinical Professor, Community Practice, School of Optometry and Vision Science

The University of Waterloo School of Optometry & Vision Science, within the Faculty of Science, is seeking qualified applicants for a full-time, regular tenure-track, faculty position at the rank of Assistant Clinical Professor in the area of Community Practice. The University of Waterloo Optometry Clinics/Waterloo Eye Institute includes primary care and specialty clinics that encompass the full spectrum of the contemporary practice of optometry. The successful candidate will have completed a Doctor of Optometry degree and will have completed a residency or have 3 or more years of clinical experience in primary care or community health optometry practice, and demonstrate an ability in teaching, patient care, and scholarship.

The successful candidate is expected to support the School’s mission to increase access to eye care for under-served communities with a special emphasis on rural, remote, and Indigenous communities. The successful candidate will provide leadership in developing the practice of teleoptometry and will coordinate with provincial associations for access to care initiatives, as part of an important strategic priority in policy development.

The range of assigned duties includes intern supervision, resident supervision, direct patient care, didactic and lab-based teaching. Assignments may include evenings, travel (both within province and across Canada), after-hours on-call services, and Saturday clinics.

Other duties include scholarship and service activities to support the School of Optometry & Vision Science and the profession of optometry. Classroom and lab teaching in the professional program will be the primary emphasis with an ability to develop and teach an array of traditional didactic and on-line courses. Scholarship may include innovations in teaching and pedagogy and/or traditional research pathways in the areas of societal impact (e.g. quality of life, equitable access to care).

Applicants should be eligible for a general or an academic certificate of registration with the College of Optometrists of Ontario and ideally be available to start by September 1, 2024.

Salary is negotiable within a range of $105,000 to $125,000 commensurate with experience and qualifications.
