ROLE of the POSITION

The Department of Early Childhood, Multilingual, and Special Education seeks applicants for a tenure-track Assistant/Associate Professor of Special Education with an emphasis in Early Intervention/Early Childhood Special Education to begin on August 1, 2023, with the potential for a qualified applicant to begin on January 1, 2023. This position offers candidates a unique opportunity to engage in collaborative research, teacher preparation, and innovation across vibrant programs in special education, early childhood education, and multilingual education in a diverse university, local, and regional context. Programs in the Department of Early Childhood, Multilingual, and Special Education partner closely with inclusive early childhood and special education programs in both public school and community settings and the selected candidate would have opportunities to engage in research, teacher preparation, and service within this environment. The selected candidate will be expected to establish and/or maintain an active research and scholarship agenda, with expectations to seek external funding to support that agenda. Additionally, the selected candidate will be required to maintain an active program of teaching (e.g., advising, recruiting, and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students, developing and teaching courses) and service, with interdisciplinary collaboration across early childhood, multilingual, and special education faculty in the department. The selected candidate will teach and advise students in undergraduate and graduate degree teacher preparation programs leading to licensure in early childhood and early childhood special education, as well as endorsement in English Language Acquisition and Development. Additionally, the selected candidate will have the opportunity to teach, mentor, and advise students in an inclusive, interdisciplinary, and dynamic doctoral program. Candidates at the rank of Associate Professor requesting consideration of tenure in the Department of Early Childhood, Multilingual, and Special Education will meet requirements for tenure as outlined in our department bylaws and will be voted on by tenured faculty in our department during final job negotiation processes.

PROFILE of the DEPARTMENT/COLLEGE

The Department of Early Childhood, Multilingual, and Special Education is comprised of a diverse faculty committed to developing innovative ideas through research, teaching, and service that improve the quality of life and educational experience for young children, multilingual learners, and individuals with disabilities from diverse backgrounds. We offer vibrant undergraduate and graduate programs in the areas of early childhood education, English language learning, and special education. Additionally, our department is home to two research centers (i.e., the Lynn Bennett Early Childhood Education Center, the Center for Autism Spectrum Disorders) and several large externally-funded projects focused on the integration of inclusive, evidence-based instruction to support diverse individuals in public school settings. Finally, we are actively engaged in our respective fields as journal editors, members of review boards, leaders of professional organizations, and thought partners to the educational community in southern Nevada.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

This position requires:

  • An earned doctoral degree in early childhood special education/early intervention or a closely related field from an accredited college or university as recognized by the United States Department of Education and/or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).

  • Practical experience in inclusive early childhood/special education/early intervention programs and facilitating access to the general education curriculum for young children with disabilities.

For applicants at the rank of Assistant Professor:

  • Potential for the development of a scholarship record commensurate with an assistant professor level.

  • Experience teaching at the college or university level.

  • Evidence of the potential for securing and managing externally-funded projects to support research and scholarship. Credentials must be obtained prior to the start of employment.

For applicants at the rank of Associate Professor:

  • Evidence of a successful scholarship record commensurate with an Associate Professor, including scholarly research and practitioner publications.

  • Evidence of effective teaching and advising at the college or university level, including undergraduate and graduate students.

  • Evidence of curriculum development and innovations in early intervention/early childhood special education/special education programs.

  • Evidence of participation in requests for external funding.

  • Applicants for this position would be tenure-eligible; it would be expected that candidates requesting consideration of tenure in the Department of Early Childhood, Multilingual, and Special Education will meet requirements for tenure as outlined in our department bylaws and will be voted on by tenured faculty in our department during final job negotiation processes.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred qualifications include:

  • Evidence of collaboration with professionals across the fields of early childhood education, early intervention/early childhood special education, special education, and multilingual education.

  • Experience teaching diverse students at the college or university level.

  • Specified knowledge and experience in any of the following:

    • Evidence-based practices in early intervention/early childhood special education instruction and intervention.

    • Assessment in young children with and/or without disabilities.

    • Behavioral and/or social-emotional interventions and programming for young children with disabilities.

    • Policy and advocacy to promote equity and inclusion of young children with disabilities and their families.

    • Equity and inclusion for multilingual young children with disabilities and their families.
