The Section of Hospital Medicine at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, Cincinnati, Ohio, is seeking between two (2) to five (5) Internal Medicine physicians for our inpatient services at UC Medical Center and the teaching activities in the Department’s Graduate Medical Education program. We seek candidates for our Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) service or Traditional General Internal Medicine service. Both BMT Hospitalists and Traditional Hospitalists contribute to the education of medical residents and students rotating with the Department of Internal Medicine and supervise Nurse Practitioners.  

 

BMT Hospitalists will provide overnight coverage of bone marrow transplant and other malignant hematology service patients. These positions also include a combination of traditional hospital medicine assignments, described below.

 

Traditional Hospitalists will provide direct patient care to inpatients at UC Medical Center, as well as teaching on the General Internal Medicine ward teams and Internal Medicine consult service. 

 

J-1 Visa sponsorship is not available.  

Essential Functions

Traditional and BMT Hospitalists:

  • Admit and workup new medical patients.
  • Monitor progress of admitted patients, adjust therapeutic interventions, and engage specialty consultation when appropriate.
  • Serve as attending on traditional residency ward teams and the medical consultation service, which includes teaching activities with resident physicians and medical students.
  • Serve as attending on direct care services, both with and without trainees, which includes teaching activities with resident physicians and medical students.
  • Perform invasive diagnostic procedures to include lumbar puncture, paracentesis, and others as competency permits.
  • Lead “rapid response” and “code blue” teams.
  • Participate in the quality improvement framework of the medical units.
  • Strive to improve clinical processes, as well as patient care, at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center.
  • Regularly attend section/divisional/departmental meetings and educational events, as assigned.
  • Timely closure of medical notes.
  • Timely submission of evaluations of residents and medical students.
  • Opportunity to collaborate with researchers in the Center for Clinical Effectiveness and Center for Health Informatics.

 

BMT Hospitalists (additional duty):

  • Provide in-house, overnight coverage for BMT service, including new admissions and care of existing patients.

Schedule:  

BMT Hospitalist:

  • 157 shifts per year, comprised of 91 nights and a mix of 66 day and swing shifts.  Most assignments are in 1-week blocks.

 

Traditional Hospitalist:

  • 175 shifts per year, comprised of up to 6 weeks of nights and 19 weeks of a mix of day and swing shifts. Precise schedule will vary from rotation to rotation depending upon the specific activity.

Minimum Requirements

Must have all of the following prior to effective date of appointment: 

  • Medical degree (MD, DO, or foreign equivalent).
  • Completion of a three year internal medicine residency.
  • Board eligibility in internal medicine as defined by completion of a three year internal medicine residency.
  • Licensure by the State of Ohio Medical Board with a valid DEA license for Schedule II-V, and all independent prescriptive authority therein.
  • A valid ACLS certificate.
