Position Overview

The Department of Molecular Biosciences at the University of Kansas invites applications for a faculty position as a tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor level to begin August 2023.We invite applications for a faculty position with research interests in the area of Cellular or Developmental Biology.

The Department of Molecular Biosciences values collaborative, interdisciplinary investigation of cells in culture, tissues, organs, and intact organisms.  Department faculty have diverse research efforts that enable innovative and cross-disciplinary approaches in areas of cancer biology, cellular and development biology, immunology, neurobiology, genetics and genomics, computational biology, microbiology, and biochemistry (http://molecularbiosciences.ku.edu ).

The successful candidate will have access to scientific shared resources and core facilities including Microscopy & Analytical Imaging, Flow Cytometry, Biospecimen Repository, Genome Sequencing, Mass Spectrometry, and Transgenic & Gene Targeting (https://molecularbiosciences.ku.edu/resources and https://www.kucancercenter.org/research/shared-resources-core-facilities ). As part of the University’s commitment to advancing the biological sciences, this position is one of five new faculty positions available in the Department of Molecular Biosciences.

The University of Kansas campus is located in Lawrence, a vibrant, thriving community of more than 95,000. The campus is close to Kansas City and the University of Kansas Medical Center and Topeka, the state capital. Along with the music, arts, culture and sports experiences offered at KU and in Lawrence, the short drive to Kansas City provides quick access to historic jazz clubs, museums, world-class music and theatre venues, and professional sports teams.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in a relevant cell/developmental biology field and post-doctoral research experience. Applicants at the Assistant Professor level are expected to demonstrate potential to establish an independent, externally-funded research program, as evidenced by research products including preprints and publications, and a statement outlining research successes and future goals. Applicants at the Associate level must have an established and currently-funded program with clear potential for continuance. As excellence in inclusive education and mentoring is a priority for our academic scientists, applicants should convey approaches and interests in these areas.  The successful candidate must be eligible to work in the U.S. by the effective date of the appointment.

Job Description

40% RESEARCH
Maintain an active and productive research program that includes:
1) Obtaining external research funding,
2) Publishing in peer-reviewed scientific journals, and
3) Presenting findings at professional conferences.

40% TEACHING/ADVISING
1) Educate undergraduate and graduate students in biology courses.
2) Participate in the academic advising of undergraduate and graduate students.
3) Mentor students in research, including serving as a dissertation/thesis director and professional mentor for students.

20% SERVICE
1) Serve on committees at the Departmental, College, and/or University levels as the opportunities arise,
2) Participate in professional service, or
3) Participate in departmental meetings.

Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. or equivalent degree in Cellular or Developmental Biology or closely related discipline.
  • One year of post-doctoral experience.
  • Publications in peer-reviewed journals with innovative research objectives that demonstrate potential for excellence in research.
  • Commitment to teaching courses in the life sciences, as evidenced by educational background and statement of teaching philosophy.
  • Commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive academic community in the life sciences, as evidenced by candidate’s response to DEI statement.
