Along with many other programs at UWM, the department maintains an active research interest in a variety of fields, including Milwaukee history. This interest is evidenced by our award-winning March on Milwaukee website, created by faculty in the department collaborating with faculty and staff in the university library and Digital Humanities Lab ; the Wisconsin Community Activism Now project, created by researchers from our Office of Undergraduate Research and faculty in the Cultures and Communities Program ; and the NEH-funded Encyclopedia of Milwaukee , a project developed and implemented by department faculty. Among these programs is a Department of African and African Diaspora Studies, which is also currently seeking to hire a historian.
Job Summary The History Department at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee seeks a professor of African American history, period and specialization open, at the Assistant or Associate level. Our department offers a BA, MAs in History and Public History, a joint MLIS-MA degree, and a PhD. More information about the programs can be found at https://uwm.edu/history/.
The teaching load will be 2:2. Teaching responsibilities include lower-level survey courses in African American history as well as upper-level and graduate classes in additional areas of expertise. Ability to teach the U.S. or World History survey and/or transnational histories is also welcome. We encourage applications from candidates who demonstrate potential for excellence in teaching and research, articulate a scholarly research agenda in African American history along with a vision for the field, have experience developing courses and/or curricula in African American history, and have experience mentoring students from under-represented groups. Candidates are encouraged to articulate their potential contribution to the department with reference to its existing strengths or gaps.
Minimum Qualifications
  • PhD by time of appointment (September 2023) in history, ethnic studies or African American studies or a related field
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching
  • Evidence of strong scholarly research agenda in African American history along with a vision for the field
  • Experience developing courses and/or curricula in African American history
  • Experience mentoring students from under-represented groups
  • Strong writing sample as evidence of potential for excellence in research
  • Potential to teach US, world, or transnational history surveys
