Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:

The Department of Kinesiology, in the College of Human Sciences at Iowa State University, invites applications for a tenure-track open rank (Assistant, Associate, or Full) Professor in the field of Exercise Psychology. The scope of this position encompasses scientists with expertise related to exercise and 24-hour movement behaviors (exercise, physical activity, sedentary behaviors, sleep) in the fields of behavior change, psychological responses to acute and chronic exercise, psychobiology, cognition, neuroscience, digital interventions, or ecological momentary assessment. Applications are invited from individuals with research interests that can be in any age group across the lifespan as well as in different settings and populations where their program of research broadly fits within Exercise Psychology.

The person who fills this position is expected to develop an externally funded research program, publish in scholarly journals, integrate expertise into teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, and provide relevant University and professional service.  The department is particularly interested in candidates who can demonstrate that their research and teaching expertise will complement and extend the expertise now available within the Department of Kinesiology.  The successful applicant will have strong departmental support, excellent research infrastructure, collaborative opportunities with relevant units on- and off-campus, and a supportive, collegial work environment.


Required Minimum Qualifications:

 Candidates must have completed the requirements for a doctorate by August 2023 in an appropriate area and have evidence of a focused research program as demonstrated by publication record with evidence of potential for (at the assistant level) or successful (associate, full) continuous external research support.


Preferred Qualifications:

 At the assistant rank, post-doctoral experience, involvement in seeking extramural funding, and college/university teaching experience are preferred, but all candidates who fulfill the required minimum qualifications are encouraged to apply. Preferred qualifications at higher ranks include consistent federal and non-federal major research funding along with evidence of national distinction in research.

The Department of Kinesiology is one of five academic units in the College of Human Sciences and offers B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in kinesiology.  The department has approximately 1100 undergraduate and 40 graduate students, making it one of the largest academic departments at Iowa State. Through our teaching, research, service, and outreach efforts, the Department of Kinesiology strives to promote health and wellbeing by creating and disseminating knowledge about physical activity and healthy living to improve the lives of citizens of Iowa, the United States, and the world. The expertise and interests of our nationally recognized faculty are diverse and reflect biomechanical, pedagogical, physiological, psychological, and sociocultural perspectives of physical activity, exercise, and health.
