Assistant/Associate of Political Science

Position description

The Department of Social Sciences at Alabama A&M University invites applications for Assistant/Associate Professor. The rank and tenure-status of the position is negotiable based on qualifications.  A senior faculty may be considered at a higher professional rank. With a graduate degree in Public Administration, the department encourages candidates with additional credentials in Public Policy, State and Local Government, Social Justice and Equity and related areas to apply.

Examples of Duties

Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Teach undergraduate political science courses.   The teaching load consists of four primarily (4) undergraduate classes each semester.
  • Provide university and professional service, inclusive of service on departmental, school, and university committees, and student advisement.
  • The faculty member shall be responsible for the following: teaching assigned classes under the supervision of the area department chair and program coordinator; helping students fulfill their maximum potential in mastering course content; assessing student learning outcomes; advising students; maintaining a thorough and up-to-date knowledge in his/her regular teaching field; continuing professional development; utilizing current technology in the performance of job duties; maintaining standards of professional conduct and ethics appropriate to the professional position; assisting with articulation and curriculum development and review;
  • Serving on college committees and participating in faculty governance including accreditation and student co-curricular activities; assuming other responsibilities as assigned by the department chair; fulfilling other duties and responsibilities of a faculty member as outlined in the faculty handbook.
  • Must have some publication and a progressive research agenda.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Typical Qualifications

Minimum Position Requirements (including years of experience, certifications, licenses, etc.): 

  • A Ph.D. in Political Science with a progressive academic and professional background is preferred.
  • The candidate should have at least three years of teaching experience in political science or related area.

Essential Functions: 

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to teach undergraduate and graduate political science courses    
  • Must be knowledgeable about the use of technology in delivering instructions or have the willingness to learn and master new technologies.
