Assistant/Associate Director of Marketing and Content

The University of Virginia’s Karsh Institute of Democracy seeks a creative and experienced Assistant/Associate Director of Marketing and Content (ADMC) to drive the institute’s nascent brand. Serving a variety of areas across the institute, the ADMC will develop marketing strategy and execute impactful and measurable marketing content, campaigns and outreach activities to reach target audiences. Reporting to the Director of Communications, the ADMC will provide marketing leadership, coordination and support, and will work with individuals across the institute to build marketing plans that deliver measurable results.  

The ADMC will create or work with vendors to create all forms of digital and print communications, including editorial content, emails, newsletters, marketing collateral, social media content, digital advertising, website content and presentations. The individual will provide recommendations on content, publications, content platform integration and opportunities that communicate the goals and advance the reputation of the Karsh Institute of Democracy. 

 
Responsibilities 

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Create and help facilitate dynamic content of various formats to be distributed across KIOD platforms, including print and digital publications, news, social media, web and others
  • Create and implement the institute’s marketing strategy to support business goals, reach a variety of target audiences and elevate the institute’s reputation
  • Plan and execute targeted, integrated marketing campaigns across paid and organic platforms
  • Plan and execute holistic marketing plans that are measurable, flexible and demonstrate effectiveness and ROI
  • Develop a framework to gather, analyze, and understand marketing data relevant to core business objectives (including social media assessment, surveying audiences, and reviewing analytics)
  • Lead the institute’s social media programs on platforms including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, and others
  • Manage a social media content calendar to ensure consistent and timely dissemination of content that aligns with communications and programmatic priorities
  • Develop relationships with social influencers to amplify the institute’s strategic priorities
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Requirements

Education: Bachelor’s degree.

Experience: At least five years of experience

Preferred Qualifications

Exceptional writing and editing skills and demonstrated ability to write for variety of platforms and voices (marketing copy, editorial, social media, etc.) 

  • Exceptional record of generating and managing creative, effective marketing and social media content to reach a variety of audiences
  • Passion for experimenting with creative and unfamiliar approaches to content creation and dissemination
  • Outstanding attention to detail
  • Ability to manage vendor projects and budgets in accordance with project scope
  • Strong interest in digital trends and identifying new opportunities to promote the institute and its work
  • Previous work experience in a higher education institution
  • Knowledge of and experience with any of the following technologies:
    • Constant Contact or other email marketing platforms
    • HootSuite or other social media management platforms
    • Drupal or other website CMS
    • Basic HTML
    • Google AdWords and Google Analytics
    • Adobe Creative Suite
    • Photography and video production

Physical Demands

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.

All team members must have access to and maintain a secure home office environment with high-speed internet service and work collaboratively with others using a variety of technologies and tools. This position is a Hybrid position that will require working intermittently in a shared office space located in Charlottesville, Virginia.

The anticipated start date is December 2022 – January 2023.

Anticipated Hiring Range for Assistant Director of Marketing Content – $72,000-$80,000 commensurate with education and experience.

Anticipated Hiring for Range Associate Director of Marketing Content – $80,000-$90,000 commensurate with education and experience.
