Position Summary Information

Duties The Assistant Archivist supports the University Archivist in several critical areas of need, including the curation of museums, the care of archival objects, and the implementation of digitization projects. This position also provides professional-level service to patrons.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Leads in the care and curation of campus museums
  • Creates and updates an inventory of objects on campus considered under the purview of the University Archives
  • Provides insight regarding the preservation of archival objects
  • Assists with digitization projects unique and significant to Athens State University
  • Suggests and manages participation in state-wide digitization initiatives
  • Creates and maintains an inventory of rare books
  • Ensures proper preservation and conversation methods for rare books
  • Processes and organizes new or unprocessed collections
  • Creates finding aids for collections
  • Manages the archives in the absence of the University Archivist
  • Provides courteous customer service to patrons of the archives
  • Assists with outreach efforts and promotion of the University Archives
  • Serves on Library-wide committees
  • Other duties as assigned
Qualifications QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

  • Bachelor’s degree; Master’s degree preferred from an accredited college or university in related field
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications
  • At least two years of experience working in an archives or archival certification
  • Effective communication skills
  • Adept at working independently and managing priorities
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including evening and weekend shifts
  • Advanced knowledge of archival procedures in organization and preservation
Salary Schedule Salary Band: P190

University Information Located in historic Athens, Alabama, Athens State University offers junior and senior-level coursework to community college graduates and transfer students holding sufficient credits from other institutions. Presently, over 3,100 students have selected Athens State because of its neighborly environment where 50 majors and degree programs are offered, with courses taught by a supportive and exceptional faculty. Approximately 80% of the students are enrolled in at least one online course. The typical student is a working adult who commutes. Recently, the University was featured in the 2015 Best Value Online College Rankings by OnlineU.org for four online programs including computer science, accounting, education and human resources. The University offers undergraduate degree programs in Liberal Arts, Teacher Preparation, and Business. The University employs more than 350 full and part-time employees with approximately 90 full-time faculty members in three colleges: College of Arts and Sciences, College of Business, and College of Education. Seventy-five percent of the full-time faculty members hold a terminal degree. The University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.
