BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY

Provides career education, programming and coaching to help students formulate and pursue their post-graduation plans. The Career Specialist will enhance student career readiness, preparing students for full-time employment and a successful transition to a professional workplace.  

This is a newly created position primarily assisting upper class Arts & Science students.  This role will work closely with the MU Career Center which provides career exploration services and the A&S Internships Office which provides students with experiential learning advising and opportunities.

SUPERVISION  

The position receives primary (daily) supervision from the MU Career Center Director and secondary (bi-weekly) supervision from the Associate Dean of the College of Arts & Science. The position will be officed in the College of Arts & Science but is a member of the Career Center staff and will work closely together with members of the Career Center and College of Arts & Science.   

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Student Advising & Outreach
Provide individual and small group student coaching regarding:
Job searching
Interview preparation
Professionalism
Branding and networking
Negotiating Offers
Gap year and employment alternatives
Develop and implement a student communication plan in coordination with the Dean’s communication team (e.g., promoting information, resources, events, etc.)
Develop and conduct employment and career readiness presentations to classes and groups
Create and implement a strategic communication plan to promote services, career readiness and Handshake to students through web sites, digital media
Develop career resources specifically focused on career readiness of liberal arts majors
Utilize existing technologies and platforms to create scalable career readiness programs and interventions

Partnerships & Collaboration

Collaborate with A&S faculty and staff to share career information (assignments, programming, and presentations) with students
Communicate with key stakeholders (academic advisors, Directors of Undergraduate Studies) about services, programs and recruitment opportunities.
Meet regularly with key campus stakeholders, including: Undergraduate Research, Fellowships & Advanced Studies (MedOpps) and Honors College
Attend MU Career Services Council and Career Leadership Council meetings, representing the College  

Recruitment Activities

Promote career activities and employment opportunities to students using the Handshake career management platform and other communication tools.
Plan, coordinate and promote career events and programming, specifically assisting with the bi-annual CAFNR/A&S Internship and Career Fair
Provide administrative support to the Handshake platform, assisting with online resume reviews and job approvals during peak recruitment times

Assessment

Serve as divisional lead for the Outcomes Survey, responsibilities, including
Developing and implementing a strategic plan to collect A&S student responses
Tracking and entering outcomes from external sources (like social media)
Attending Outcomes Administrator meetings and trainings
Assess outreach, advising and programs to enhance and adapt efforts for maximum effectiveness

Other Duties:

Recruit, train and supervise 1-2 student paraprofessionals
Participate in College-wide activities such as Summer Welcome, A&S Week, etc.
Participate in Career Center staff meetings and retreats
