Position Details The Physical Plant team is responsible for operations and maintenance of Wesleyan buildings and grounds. The team includes a staff of skilled tradespeople who maintain and repair campus buildings and associated equipment. The physical plant team also operates the Central Power Plant, which supplies and distributes steam for heating and chilled water for air conditioning purposes.
Reporting to the Heating Ventilating and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Shop Working Foreperson, the Apprentice HVAC Mechanic is responsible for assisting in preventive, planned and corrective maintenance and small projects in university owned properties. The Apprentice HVAC Mechanic will be trained through the apprenticeship program to become skilled and licensed as a HVAC Mechanic.
Responsibilities include
  • Helping install, maintain, and repair heating and air systems
  • Changing air filters, belts, cleaning coils, routine inspections of all HVAC equipment
  • Working alongside licensed HVAC mechanic to learn all aspects of the trade as follows
  • Pipe/Tube Work Installation, Maintenance, Repair
  • Steam/Hot Water Heating Installation, Maintenance, Repair
  • Warm Air Heating /Cooling Installation, Maintenance, Repair
  • Residential/Commercial Cooling Installation, Maintenance, Repair
  • Commercial/Industrial Refrigeration Installation, Maintenance, Repair
  • Oil Burner Installation, Maintenance, Repair
  • Process Piping – Misc. Installation, Maintenance, Repair
  • Welding/Brazing
  • Safety and OSHA requirements.
  • Attending State required classes to obtain license.
  • Transporting, lifting and installing air conditioners, boilers, air handlers, furnaces and other related equipment and supplies using ladders, extension ladders and platforms.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Physical Demands/Working Conditions include Balancing, Climbing, Carrying, Pulling/Pushing (up-to 150 pounds), Reaching, Repetitive Movement, Sitting, Standing, Twisting, Bending, Lifting (50-100 lbs.), Kneeling and Squatting, walking, standing, frequent overhead reaching, Climbing ladders, and working from platforms and heights as needed
This position is full-time, 40 hours per week, 52 weeks per year, and is in the physical plant bargaining unit. Typical work hours are Monday – Friday 8am – 5pm with 1 hour lunch break.
This position may be required to work frequent overtime shifts which may include returning to work between shifts, nights, holidays and weekends as directed.
This position is classified as essential personnel and as such are required to report to work/remain at work even if classes are cancelled and the campus is working on limited operations in an emergency.

Minimum Qualifications High school graduate or equivalent.
Demonstrated mechanical ability and aptitude.
Ability to use hand and power tools, refrigeration gauges, mono-meters, and many other trade related testing equipment
Ability to provide own basic tools of the trade for a HVAC
Ability to meet the classroom instruction hours as determined by the CT Department of Labor and pass required licensing exams
Ability to take direction from others with an eagerness to work and learn.
Ability to follow and maintain the required safety protocols
Effective communication skills.
Desktop computer skills including the fundamental use of internet, e-mail and maintenance management systems.
Possession and continuous maintenance of valid State of Connecticut driver’s license and safe driving skills.
Ability to meet work conditions and physical demands on a continuous basis with or without a reasonable accommodation
Preferred Qualifications Relevant work experience in assisting with HVAC work
Graduate from a trade or vocational school HVAC program.
