Animal Facility Attendant

Pay Rate: $39.92 – $42.03 (HEW Level 2)
Appointment Type: Casual
Location: Macquarie University, Wallumattagal Campus, Dharug land, North Ryde

THE ROLE

The Animal Facility Attendant will provide support to animal facilities and animal technicians. Operate and maintain equipment and the facility.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Operate washroom and cleaning equipment (autoclave, rack washer, floor buffer) and maintain operation records as required by regulatory agencies

  • Clean, wash, sterilise and prepare equipment for animal housing

  • Stock consumables across the facility. Ensure consumables are rotated and alert the facility manager when consumables should be replenished

  • Clean the facility and support areas, ensure cleanliness is maintained

  • Work with external contractor to ensure adequate supply of clean gowns and uniforms. Collect used gowns from the facility routinely as instructed by the facility manager

  • Meet strict timeframes

  • Collect environmental samples for facility health testing

  • Assist the facility manager and animal technicians as needed

  • Comply with relevant EEO and WHS regulations

  • Perform any other duties as required and appropriate for this classification

Macquarie Animal Research Services (MARS) is responsible for the supply, breeding and care of animals used for research and teaching and the maintenance of the animal holding facilities.

It has responsibilities for activities such as overseeing safety and regulatory compliance and providing assistance and training to research staff. Operating within a highly regulated environment, the MARS staff are committed to high animal welfare standards while supporting Macquarie University’s research through efficient delivery of services.

  • Demonstrated attention to detail

  • Proven ability to follow instructions to the latest

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team

  • Excellent communication skills

Desired

  • Experience working in research animal facilities

  • Knowledge of Animal Ethics legislation in accordance with the NHMRC Code of Practice and the NSW Animal Research Act

  • Familiarity with Occupational Health and Safety regulations
