Job Summary:

The Dairy Cattle Center is part of the Integrated Dairy Facilities for the Department of Animal and Dairy Science at UW-Madison. This industry leading facility is located in the heart of the UW-Madison campus and is home to 84 lactating cows. This facility plays a critical role in supporting the teaching, research, and outreach missions of the university. The capacity for unique, individualized nutrition based research, as well as research on mammary and reproductive physiology, and transition cow management. In addition, the ability for intensive hands-on learning opportunities makes this facility one of a kind.
This position is involved in all aspects of research dairy operations, including but not limited to, milking, feeding, cleaning, handling, and animal health observations at the facility. This position must function with close, progressing to limited supervision. The incumbent in this position must work with limited supervision to collect, process, and composite milk samples according to established standard operating procedures.

Responsibilities: Collects samples and administers medication and treatments, in addition to feeding and maintenance responsibilities, to ensure compliance with animal care regulations and support research and instruction.
  • 10% Collects samples from animals and administers medications, injections, and treatments according to established protocols and procedures to be used for diagnostic tests and research
  • 20% Inventories, cleans, and maintains organization of animal holding spaces and supplies
  • 10% Prepares food and formulas and feeds animals according to established schedules and specifications
  • 10% Inspects and reports equipment problems to ensure optimal and safe operation
  • 10% Maintains organization of and updates records related to research procedures
  • 40% Observes animal behavior, performs basic animal care, and reports concerns to the appropriate entities to contribute to the health and well-being of animals and promote research

Qualifications:

The incumbent must be skilled at following oral and written instructions as directed by management and research protocols. Also, the person in this position must understand basic arithmetic functions and be adept at performing them with no guidance.

Work Schedule:

Schedule will vary based on operational need with normal shift hours from 4:00 AM – 12:30 PM or 11:30 AM – 8:00 PM 5 days a week, with a rotating every other weekend requirement. Note* If the selected candidate is hired on a part-time basis, shifts will be determined by operational need.

Work Type:

Full or Part Time: 60% – 100%
It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.

Additional Information:

Must be able to lift 50 pounds. Position requires frequent bending and twisting, along with repetitive motions of hands, wrists, and arms. Must be able to respond quickly to actions of 300-1400 pound animals to prevent being stepped on and/or pinned against a gate.
