Scope of Position  

The Ohio State University Medical Center is committed to enhancing the quality of care our patients receive.  The AA functions as an integral Member of the patient care team, whose members reflect a culture of cooperation, enthusiasm, and mutual respect.  The team provides patient care and supportive services that are directed toward the achievement of quality patient care outcomes, improvement of service levels, reduction in length of hospitalizations and reduction of cost. 

Position Summary  

The AA is a certified non-physician anesthesia provider who demonstrates excellence in all areas of anesthesia practice including but not limited to anesthesia case management, staff education and clinical research.  The AA manages complex, unpredictable anesthesia situations.  The AA must be competent in technical, cognitive and interpersonal skills required to serve those patients receiving anesthesia care and services.  The AA is expected to practice within the established Medical Center guidelines, statutes established by the state medical board, anesthesia, (policies, procedures, protocols), and adhere to the Intensive Caring Value Statements.  The AA works as a member of the patient care team and collaborates with an MDA in the anesthetic care of each and every patient.

Duties and Responsibilities  

Assessing patients preoperatively, formulating and implementing plan of care and evaluating outcomes of care for each patient.  Clinical practice/clinical management includes but is not limited to the following:

              ♦  Perioperative assessment upon admission to include biophysical, psychosocial and anesthesia parameters

              ♦  Develop an anesthetic care plan based upon assessment, lab work and ECG

              ♦  Collaborate with appropriate staff to implement anesthetic care plan.

              ♦  Responds appropriately to any change in the patient condition

                             *            Implement CPR or ACLS

                             *            Notifies MDA of changes in patient condition

                             *            Performs emergency intubation or airway management

                             *            Administers medication necessary for resuscitation

              ♦  Manages and maintains patient in anesthetized state using appropriate techniques and an accurate knowledge of pharmacologic agents

              ♦  Manages/provides and documents a safe environment for patients

              ♦  Operates all anesthesia related equipment properly

              ♦  Demonstrates a knowledge of and is able to implement care in emergency situations

              ♦  Participates in quality assessment and improvement activities and staff meetings

              ♦ Collaborates with MDA/surgeon and other clinical disciplines in making decisions regarding each patients need for anesthesia care. 

Professional/Education Development this includes but is not limited to the following:  Attending AAAA or ASA accredited meetings.  Attending department weekly case management report. 

Organizational Expectations  

Practices within the OSU Medical Center’s policies and procedures and protocols including the dress code and attendance policies.  Maintains infection control standards, implements appropriate patient safety protocols and necessary.  Adheres to the Intensive Caring Value statements and core competencies as demonstrated through positive patient/guest relations, positive and effective interactions with staff, and formulating and meeting developmental goals.

Minimum Qualifications  

For Hire:  

Graduate of a CAAHEP accredited school for anesthesia assistants (18month or 24month program).  Current certification from the NCCAA. Current licensure from the Ohio State Medical Board. Current ACLS certification.  Must be eligible to obtain clinical privileges as designated by the OSUMC Corporate Credentialing Office. 

On going:

Must maintain the following  NCCAA Certification, Ohio State Medical Board Licensure, (3)ACLS certification, (4)Clinical credentials with OSUMC Corporate Credentialing.
