Description of Work Unit The Access Center (TAC) is comprised of 12 programs: Upward Bound (77), Upward Bound (17), Upward Bound (Math/Science), Educational Talent Search, Educational Opportunity Center, Bridge Scholars Program, Reach Out, Community For Excellence, Alliance Partnership program, CSU College Bound, the TRIO Priority 1 training grant, and the Lorenzo De Zavala Leadership Institute.
As part of its Land Grant Mission, Colorado State University is committed to making education accessible to those who, due to economic or social conditions, have not previously been offered full participation in post-secondary education. It is with this mission in mind that the Access Center was created.
The Access Center strives to develop the talents of those who have been traditionally underrepresented in higher education (first-generation, low-income, ethnically or racially diverse, and non-traditional age) during their pre-college years by:
  • Nurturing college-bound aspirations
  • Increasing academic skills and motivations
  • Reaching out to Colorado’s historically under-served secondary students
  • Facilitating the college application enrollment, and student aid processes
  • Assisting in the transition to college supporting retention efforts

Educational Talent Search, a federally funded TRIO program, is designed to assist middle school and high school students from first generation and low-income backgrounds to complete secondary school and enter postsecondary education programs. Program services include group and individual counseling, academic advising and support, exposure to career and educational opportunities, and personal enrichment events. The target area for the program includes 7 high schools and 4 middle schools in Larimer, Weld, Morgan, and Adams counties.

Position Summary The Advisor for the Educational Talent Search program in the Access Center is responsible for group and individual student advising related to applying to and persisting in postsecondary education. The Advisor reports to the Assistant Director of Educational Talent Search.
The Advisor will be a full-time Administrative-Professional university appointment. This position requires a varied work schedule that includes evening hours, weekends, and requires substantial travel within the state and out-of-state in the summer. The Advisor must maintain a valid Colorado Driver’s License or have access to a licensed driver. The university will conduct a criminal and motor vehicle background check on final candidates
Required Job Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in education, counseling, social work, higher education, experiential learning or other related field (achieved by hire date).
  • At least one year experience advising, supervising and/or mentoring disadvantaged high school/middle school youth in an educational setting (“Disadvantaged,” according to the U.S. Department of Education, signifies an individual who meets low-income guidelines and who is a potential first-generation college student. A “first generation” individual is a person whose parents have not earned a baccalaureate degree).
  • Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license or access to a licensed driver by the employment start date.
Preferred Job Qualifications
  • Ability to facilitate high school/middle school student learning through academic and student development activities and workshops
  • Demonstrated effective communication skills (including ability to present effectively, write clearly, and demonstrate proficient use of computer applications)
  • Experience with establishing and maintaining appropriate classroom and workshop setting through the use of effective classroom management skills and interactive engagement strategies
  • Experience in building professional relationships including the ability to develop and maintain relationships between and amongst the program, community and target schools.
  • Experience in building community networks in support of student success
  • Experience in a variety of research-based education strategies (including technology) to accommodate multi-age/multi-level students
  • Record keeping and data management abilities such as: maintaining records regarding program activities and student eligibility and performance and submitting reports regarding student outcomes.
  • Experience working with target population including middle school and high school students from first-generation/ low-income communities.
  • Bilingual ability (Spanish/English) desirable

  • Plan, implement, and supervise many one-day and several multiple-day trips to colleges/universities, educational and career sites in order to expose students to regional and national cultural, educational, and career opportunities

  • Recruit eligible participants into the program and develop a substantial wait-list of qualified potential participants.
  • Meet regularly with parents of participating students, and design and present workshops for parent groups.
  • Participate in the planning and implementation of summer residential programs for student participants on the University campus.

  • Contribute to and actively support efforts of the Talent Search and the Access Center staff teams, through meetings, retreats, program planning, collaboration on activities, and participation in Access Center committees.
  • Participate in and contribute to program planning and professional development activities of the program, including appropriate conference and training opportunities when available, as well as the development of the staff team.
  • Develop and maintain a network of academic and career resources for the benefit of the program and participants and connect students with appropriate resources based on student needs.
  • Available personal, reliable transportation, a valid driver’s license, and willingness and ability to travel extensively in the target area, including travel to the target schools up to four days a week.
  • Ability to work irregular work hours when necessary, including nights, weekends, and overnight events.
  • Other duties as assigned.
