BASIC FUNCTION:

Under the supervision of the Director, provide advising services to international students and scholars with F/J non-immigrant status on immigration and employment regulations, university resources and personal/cultural matters. Serve as Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO).

Duties and ResponsibilitiesESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Advise, counsel, and assist F-1 students, J-1 students, and J-1 scholars to ensure maintenance of their non-immigrant status, employment authorization, U.S. culture, academic, social, personal adjustment, etc.

Create, update, and maintain student and scholar records in SEVIS to include reportable events as required by federal regulations.

Advise students on logistical matters including obtaining a social security number and applying for a U.S. driver’s license/state ID.

Maintain up to date knowledge of federal regulations, SEVIS procedures, university academic policies and procedures to provide timely and comprehensive advising.

Liaise with relevant government agencies, including the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the Student & Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP), the Department of State (DOS), U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), and United States Citizenship & Immigration Services (USCIS) regarding student requests, data fixes, and travel.

Design and/or deliver regulatory workshops for international students, scholars, and relevant colleagues.

Communicate with academic and co-op/career advisors to support comprehensive international student advising.

Collaborate with university academic services and programming support team on orientation programming as it pertains to immigration compliance and the initial review of F and J regulations with new students.

Cross train and coordinate with the International Enrollment Management team to develop and implement a comprehensive student onboarding support strategy for international students.

Serve within the emergency phone on-call rotation.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Perform other duties as assigned.

LICENSES, TOOLS, AND EQUIPMENT:

Personal computers, printers, and word processing, database management software and spreadsheet software.

Required QualificationsREQUIRED:

1. Bachelor’s degree.

2. Minimum of one years’ experience as a DSO/ARO working directly with SEVIS to process documentation, maintain records and comply with regulatory reporting requirements.

3. Must have U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent residency which are required to be a DSO/ARO.

4. Demonstrated knowledge of F-1 and J-1 regulations.

5. Demonstrated professional experience working with international student (and scholar) populations throughout all parts of the international student experience (pre-arrival, enrollment, post-completion employment).

6. Demonstrated ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.

7. Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively as a member of a team.

8. Demonstrated strong verbal and interpersonal communication skills.

9. Demonstrated proficiency in written communication skills.

10. Demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups/populations.

Preferred QualificationsPREFERRED:

1. Master’s degree.

2. Demonstrated knowledge of and experience working with immigration regulations pertaining to H1-B, Permanent Residence, TN, E-3, O-1, B1/B2.

3. Demonstrated familiarity with Peoplesoft and Sunapsis.

4. Previous or current participation in NAFSA: Association of International Educators.

5. Demonstrated study/work abroad or other living experience overseas.
