Job summary

The Dyson School of Design Engineering is the 10th and newest engineering department at Imperial College London. Our Department brings together traditional engineering disciplines such as materials, electrical and electronic engineering, and computing science, with areas such as behavioural science, design thinking, ethics, and business model innovation, to foster creativity and rigour in a single engineering discipline. Our objective is delivering paradigm shifting innovation in Design Engineering Research, as well as leading edge education at both undergraduate and post-graduate levels. 

Research activity in the department spans several broad areas that include: sustainable and environmental design; design process; human factors; internet of things; digital health and wellbeing; smart mobility and smart cities; distributed ledger technology; nudging theory; advanced manufacturing; servitization and sharing economy analytics; responsible and ethical AI; robotics; and design psychology; all of which underpin the Schools’ impact themes of Responsible AI, Sustainable Growth; Future Mobility as well as Health.

Applications are invited for a one-year fixed term post in the Dyson School of Design Department Engineering to help lead a team in designing fair AI systems. Candidates must have an outstanding record of achievement in Bayesian statistics and probability, Fully Probabilistic Design, experience of Optimal Transport, a curiosity for distributed ledgers, and a strong interest in social justice.

Successful candidates will be able to demonstrate not only an outstanding and leading international track record, but also the ability, curiosity, and strategic vision, necessary to develop the new research directions and partnerships that will help establish the school as a global leader. In addition to outstanding records of accomplishment in areas pertaining to Design Engineering, candidates will be expected to complement and strengthen existing research and teaching activity in the School and be able to innovate and help deliver very high-quality research-informed teaching at post-graduate level.

  • To lead the Autofair project commencing 2023
  • To lead i3Lab projects
  • To contribute to the teaching portfolio of the department
  • To mentor Ph.D. students

Essential requirements

Essential requirements:

  • Outstanding record of achievement in Bayesian statistics and probability
  • Outstanding record of achievement in Fully Probabilistic Design
  • Experience of Optimal Transport
  • A curiosity for distributed ledgers
  • A strong interest in social justice
  • Strong experience of transfer learning in ML is also an essential requirement
  • A strong teaching portfolio
