Scope of Position

The Advanced Practice Provider is responsible for providing health care services to adult patients within the parameters of a supervisory agreement or standard care agreement with an attending physician member of James Cancer Hospital and Research Institute.

Position Summary

The Advanced Practice Provider provides health care services to adult patients working in collaboration with a licensed physician member of CHRI medical staff.  Health care services provided include 24/7 care during acute and chronic phases of illness, education and counseling of individuals and families, health promotion and prevention and referral to other health care providers and community resources when appropriate.

Minimum Qualifications

Current license to practice as a PA or APRN-CNP in the state of Ohio. Graduate of a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner program that qualifies the graduate to sit for the certification examination of a national certifying organization recognized by the Ohio Medical Board or Ohio Board of Nursing. Masters degree in Physician Assistant Studies or Nursing.

Additional Information:

Duties: Provide Daytime coverage of Inpatient Medical Oncology and Oncology Hospitalist Services.  Would cover one service with approximate census of 14 patients in collaboration with attending physician.  Expected daily patient load 7-9.  Responsible for all aspects of patient management while covering including pre-rounding, daily multidisciplinary rounds/care planning, ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests and imaging studies, prescribing medications and treatments, evaluating for treatment responses.  Responsible for admission orders and H&P documentation, discharging patients, and managing all changes in clinical status.

Hours: 7:00am-7:00pm, 3 days per week. 50% or more of workdays will occur on Weekends, Holidays, or Nights

Emphasis on collaborative APP practice with significant APP autonomy and decision-making.  All patients with solid tumor malignancies hospitalized either with acute illness or for inpatient chemotherapy.  Emphasis on inpatient management of Oncologic Emergencies (neutropenic sepsis, spinal cord compression, pulmonary embolism, paraneoplastic syndromes (hypercalcemia, SIADH).  APP is first call.  This is a hospitalist role as well as an oncology role.

Hospitalist experience is ideal. Oncology experience preferred. If new grad APP, completion of a fellowship in Oncology, Acute/Critical Care, or Hospital Medicine is strongly preferred.

Nurse Practitioner candidates:

-Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (ACNP) or Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AGACNP) certification is strongly preferred. 

-NP applicants who are not acute care certified but who have inpatient hospitalist experience will be considered.  

-New grad NPs who are not acute care certified will not be considered unless they have completed a relevant fellowship
