| Organizational Unit Overview | The mission of the Department of Special Education, Foundations, and Research is to provide comprehensive programs and rich clinical experiences in special education, core educational foundation, and research knowledge and skills for all teacher education students. The courses offered by these programs are designed to prepare teachers who are reflective practitioners and leaders who provide effective professional service to the community, the state, and the nation. The Department also houses several graduate certificates and the Irene Howell Assistive Technology Center. The Special Education, Foundations, and Research programs are committed to the preparation of teachers who are knowledgeable, reflective, technologically proficient, and skilled in meeting the needs of a diverse student populations and evaluating their practice and its impact on their students. The programs place an emphasis on service through faculty participation in the improvement of the public schools, participation in the development and creation of educational policy for North Carolina, and engagement in scholarship and research/creative activity. |
| Job Duties | Duties assigned by the chair. Communicate information related to various programs to meet needs of faculty, staff and students, including working with confidential information. Compose letters and reports related to various policies and procedures of the programs. Work with numerous software/computer applications to meet unique needs of programs, faculty, and students. To work with departmental/programmatic processes relevant to the needs of the office. In addition, the person will work directly with a wide variety of records and reports, and coordinate activities with other entities to conduct the work of the department. Is able to independently resolve issues and provide recommendations for future solutions to such issues. Has a working understanding of programmatic policies and procedures and is able to effectively use this information in the analysis of information and apply it to decision-making. Serves as lead records administrator for the department and is able to gather and interpret data in ways that are useful for a variety of reports. Takes a lead role in examining and administering budgets and makes decisions regarding effective use of available funds. Other responsibilities include independently researching, collecting, compiling, and maintaining information affecting organizational goals and objectives and administrator’s decision-making needs including SACS records, personnel records, annual review materials, tenure and promotion materials, hiring records, departmental meeting records and the data included in accreditation reports. |

| Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education | Graduation from high school and two years of progressive administrative office experience. Experience with Banner, ODS, ecuBIC, Microsoft Excel, and Port highly desired. |
