Job Summary/Purpose: The adjunct instructor provides instruction in Chemistry, directs student discussion and evaluates student performance in the classroom. To create and implement learning activities for assigned 100- and/or 200-level chemistry, or GS 105 (General Science: Chemistry), courses as a member of an instructional department of full-time and part-time science instructors. The instructor will work with other chemistry faculty to design and deliver assigned courses.
• This is a part-time (.50 FTE) benefited position. Hours of work may include evening or weekend teaching assignments.
• Adjunct Instructor compensation begins at Step 1 / $628 per load unit (LU). Load Unit is not always equivalent to class credit; and shall include both teaching and other assignments.
• Adjunct Faculty positions are represented by the Faculty Forum Collective Bargaining Agreement.
• May include travel throughout the College district.
• Official transcripts are required upon hire. Applicants anticipating Degree completion must supply a letter from his/her university stating the degree title and that the degree will be granted by that date.
COCC employees must work and reside in the state of Oregon at the time their work is being performed.
• The College is NOT able to support Visa applications for this position. Applicants must already be eligible to work in the United States to be considered for this position.

• Effective Monday, April 18, 2022, COCC implemented a COVID-19 vaccination requirement for all employees, including benefited employees, part-time faculty, and temporary workers such as irregular wage, work study and community education. Upon hire, new employees will receive an email with instructions outlining how to upload proof of full COVID-19 vaccination or request a medical or religious exception.
Essential Functions:
  • Provide instruction in Chemistry and assist with providing other coursework for Chemistry programs. Teaching assignments may include courses taught during the day and/or evening classes taught on or off campus
  • Lecture and guide in-classroom activities, online/web-based activities, provide individual conference time to guide and evaluate student progress. Teaching assignments may include courses taught during the day and/or evening, classes taught on or off campus.
  • Work collaboratively with other the Chemistry faculty and other instructors in the Science Department to foster excellence in the Chemistry program and its teaching. This includes working successfully with colleagues in the Science Department to develop and modify curricula, integrate new instructional methods into courses, and work to assure curricular coherence with other programmatic coursework.
  • Provide one hour of office time per week per course to guide and evaluate student progress. Teaching requires maintaining one office hour per course, per week.
  • Utilize resources, including technological resources such as Blackboard, to provide current course content and to record grades.
  • Conduct classroom presentations and activities; incorporate new methodologies in teaching and technology into classes. Includes shared responsibility for curriculum development and participation in evaluation for courses and the program.
  • Act as a resource person for students.
  • Perform other essential duties and tasks specific to each location, by required deadlines relevant to part-time instructor teaching assignments, as assigned.
  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Individuals must possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that he or she can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities. The individual is expected to follow College work rules and policies.
  • Thorough knowledge of the field of Chemistry in the broadest possible sense and demonstrable evidence of excellence in teaching typical college chemistry coursework at the 100- and 200-course level. This includes demonstrable evidence of the on-going pursuit of activities intended to improve teaching skills.
  • Knowledge of current best practices in teaching and learning in these subject areas for traditional and non-traditional students, including learner-centered, active engagement, constructivist, and other pedagogies.
  • Visual ability, including corrected-vision, to be able to observe and supervise students in laboratory situations.
  • Familiarity with and ability to operate or oversee the operation of audio-visual equipment, including classroom computers and presentation equipment, as well as course management systems (“Blackboard” is currently being used at COCC).
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing, using the English language, with or without the use of an interpreter or auxiliary aids or services.
  • Ability to review, understand, and apply concepts presented in training programs, conferences, and/or professional literature.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with department faculty and staff, and other faculty, staff and administrators at COCC.
  • A willingness to travel and/or teach at various hours and locations, as required.
  • Ability to work effectively and sensitively with constituents from diverse cultural backgrounds and perspectives.
  • Physical Demands and Other Ergonomic Requirements: Work is performed in classroom and office environments with the ability to sit or stand at workstation for extended periods. The employee is regularly required to use computers, white boards, projectors, and other basic office equipment. The employee is regularly required to sit, use hands and fingers, handle or feel objects, tools or controls, reach with hands and arms and requires near visual acuity to write, read written materials and computer screens, and sufficient hearing and speech ability for ordinary conversations. Computer screen is used frequently. Occasional lifting up to 25 lbs. Travel throughout the College district as needed. A flexible work schedule, including evenings and weekends, may be necessary due to the nature of the position responsibilities. The employee is required to meet physical and ergonomic requirements of the program area as this may vary from positions. All individuals are required to be able to perform the essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
    Persons in this position may be exposed to blood or other bodily fluids, or potentially infectious materials and therefore are required to have a current Hepatitis B vaccination. The employee has the right to waive the inoculations.

    Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in Chemistry or closely related field.

  • Teaching experience relevant to lower division college Chemistry courses.
