Mission and objectives

Helping countries to achieve the simultaneous eradication of poverty and significant reduction of inequalities and exclusion. With the changing world as the backdrop, and building on our core strengths, our vision is focused on making the next big breakthrough in development: to help countries achieve the simultaneous eradication of poverty and significant reduction of inequalities and exclusion. This is a vision within reach, with the eradication of extreme poverty and major reductions in overall poverty feasible within a
Organization generation. It should be possible as well to make significant inroads against mission and income and non- income measures of inequality and exclusion within this objectives time fame. This ambitious vision will require an institution that meets benchmarks for organizational effectiveness that match or exceed the highest standards set in its peer community. It will also demand that we organize our work around a focused set of outcomes. These outcomes will support the priorities and needs of each country and region, and capture the development changes UNDP will contribute towards directly, significantly and variably during the course of the Strategic Plan. In so doing, we will align our approach to results with other United Nations agencies.

Context

In 2019, UNDP Somalia launched its Accelerator Lab, which is a new service offering that works with people, governments and the private sector to reimagine development for the 21st century. Through long- standing partnerships with governments, we are creating a new capacity for decision makers to explore, experiment and develop mutually reinforcing portfolios of solutions to address complex challenges from multiple angles. The purpose of the Accelerator Lab surrounds the frontier challenge that encompasses the provision of public services, more specifically “basic and quality public services” to narrow the focus of the Lab’s projects. Importantly, the Accelerator Lab’s methodology draws on local solutions that already work – whether it’s a popular invention, an alternative policy solution, or a business that makes the world a better place. The Accelerator Lab radically drives learning about what works, operating as a globally integrated network where each lab learns from the rest, exploring multiple solutions simultaneously, and designing experiments that teach us whether solutions can work and grow in weeks or weeks, months instead of years. The Accelerator Lab network is part of UNDP’s broader efforts to expand the way the organization invests, thinks, and delivers development. With the start of 2022 the Accelerator Lab is rolling out a series of blogs and publications highlighting the action plan for 2022 and separately focusing on different activities the lab is working on.
