Accelerating Micro-Reactor Development: Transforming Space and Earth Energy Systems

About the Project

We’re seeking a motivated PhD candidate to join our team in exploring optimal system configurations for achieving long-life, autonomous operation and high operating temperatures in micro-reactors. This research aims to address critical issues in space reactor development by investigating high-power (MWe-scale) reactor concepts and utilising advanced high-fidelity computational methods, including finite element analysis, to simulate whole-core behaviour. The proposed methods will have broad applications, benefiting both current and advanced nuclear systems on Earth as well as novel space applications including planetary surface power and advanced deep-space propulsion technologies.

This project presents an exciting opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research with profound implications for space exploration and terrestrial energy solutions. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in applying novel methods to expedite the advancement of these pioneering systems. While the work will centre on simulation, benchmarking against published experiments and models will support validation and verification of the models developed.

Applicants should have, or expect to achieve, at least a 2.1 honours degree or a master’s (or equivalent) in a relevant science or engineering related discipline. The ideal candidate will possess expertise in programming languages (e.g., Python); data manipulation; probability theory; linear algebra; and, most importantly, a keen interest in applying mathematical processes to tackle real-world challenges using computational tools.
