Job Description

The School of Human Evolution and Social Change is seeking a dynamic, highly motivated individual with a passion for student success and a strong focus in advancing higher education initiatives, while providing hands-on support and services that enhance student experiences and outcomes. The Academic Success Advisor reports to the Associate Director of Student and Academic Services (SAS) and is a pivotal member of the school’s SAS team. This position works with minimal supervision and a high degree of initiative to deliver and maintain high-quality services for SHESC students. This position will support all aspects of the academic programs, while championing other program specific objectives in the School of Human Evolution and Social Change. This position provides 1:1 academic advisement with prospective and current SHESC students in making timely progress toward a degree, certificate, or minor, assists in the administrative support of all degree programs that include online and immersion students in Anthropology, Global Health, and Applied Math for the Life and Social Sciences, and collaborates on initiatives related to retention, engagement, recognition, orientation, and outreach of students through effective information management, marketing/promotional activities, programs and events.

This position will be responsible for supporting about 1100 undergraduate and graduate students while directly supporting the School’s programmatic growth, particularly in the areas of advising and retention. The position is part of a team that manages advising, study abroad programs, events, course management, and retention functions to increase student retention and graduation. This position will utilize a computer (MS Office, PeopleSoft, DARS, and Dashboards, E2E appointment system, salesforce) to accomplish daily tasks.

Essential Duties

  • Advises students majoring in SHESC programs; assisting students in the development of their academic plans; develops and maintains print and electronic materials regarding current curriculum information, critical tracking/progress towards degree, course availability, school/college policy and procedures, appropriately referring students for financial, health, grievance, personal, housing, career and other matters through collaboration with other University student services offices.
  • Proactively monitors student academic performance; addresses, responds to, and works to resolve student concerns, questions, or issues; collaborates closely with students to identify all academic options including, but not limited to: degrees, tutoring, counseling, career services, success coaches, extracurricular activities, study abroad program(s), research, and internships; supports and provides information to students in selection of options best suited to the student’s goals, interests, and skills.
  • Works with student and academic services team on orientation, welcome events, town halls, commencement, homecoming, study abroad fairs, department receptions and the cultivation and support of relevant student organizations.
  • Securely collects, cleanses, standardize, transforms and stores data from various sources ensuring data integrity.
  • Answering inquiries from prospective students and corresponding with current students to assist with retention projects
  • Provides student information about policies and procedures
  • Collaborates with staff and faculty on administrative tasks related to event planning
  • Acts as college/department liaison to current and prospective students, faculty, staff, and external groups on issues related to academic success
  • Works collaboratively and collegially with academic units and services throughout the university to facilitate comprehensive student support.
  • Utilizes a variety of university data and programmatic direction to promote student academic success.
  • Utilizes a computer (MS Office, PeopleSoft, DARS, and Dashboards, E2E appointment system, salesforce) to accomplish daily tasks
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree AND one (1) year or more previous experience in one or more of the following: advising, student recruitment/retention or related student services utilizing a proactive and innovative approach which results in demonstrated outcomes in retention, graduation, and academic planning; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Desired Qualifications

  • Evidence of a Master’s degree in a related area appropriate to this position (i.e. Higher Education, Anthropology, Social Sciences, etc.).
  • Experience advising students
  • Experience working with both undergraduate and graduate level students; as well as working with diverse populations.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current issues and theories in public and higher education, college academic advising, student recruitment, retention, and student success.
  • Experience with student information systems (i.e. PeopleSoft), student degree auditing reports (i.e. DARS), MS Office Suite, data retrieval, salesforce, reporting, and analysis (i.e. Data Warehouse and data dashboards.
  • Experience using Adobe Connect, Skype, Zoom and/or other technologies to advise students remotely.
  • Experience in developing and maintaining professional working relationships while working in a team environment.
  • Experience in organizing/planning special events and activities within Student and Academic Services.
  • Experience in designing and delivering oral and written presentations.
  • Evidence of effective communication skills.
  • Experience working effectively in an environment subject to quickly changing priorities
  • Experience in offering high-level, fast paced customer service in a student services environment that prioritizes the success of a student in their approach to academic advising.

Working Environment

  • Activities performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and utilizing a mouse.
  • Use of computer, software and office machines.
  • Required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work.
  • Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds.
  • Communicate to perform essential functions. 
  • Work both independently and within a complex structured team.
