Position Overview
The Academic Success Navigator Assistant Director provides direct supervisory leadership to the KU Academic Success Navigators and the related service functions of that team. This position will be responsible for implementing strategies for superior customer service for all prospective and current students engaged by Navigators and is responsible for technology usage and enhancements needed to deliver quick, personalized service to new Jayhawks. This position will evaluate the effectiveness of the Navigator Service Model and provide reports to leadership and stakeholders. The Academic Success Navigator Assistant Director reports to the Executive Director of Success Initiatives and works collaboratively with the leadership team of Academic Success to execute effective student outreach strategies.
Academic Success Navigators are a cross-trained team of student outreach experts who specialize in student inquiry outreach, new applicant communications, and non-credit student service. The team is part of the Student Success Initiatives department within Academic Success at KU along with the Academic Success Technology team, the Military-Affiliated Student Center, and Transfer and Returning Student Resources.
Unit Overview
Academic Success advocates for and strategically advances education at the University of Kansas. We walk with students from orientation to graduation, providing them with high-quality, data driven academic and career advising, targeted academic support systems and networks, and empowering and engaging experiential learning. We serve the university, coordinating with faculty, staff, and students throughout KU to further educational initiatives and strategic goals. Our units include University Academic Support Centers, Centers for Orientation and Academic Advising Programs, Career and Experiential Learning and Student Success Initiatives.

Job Description
45% Navigator Services Supervision
- Manage the day-to-day functions of the Navigator staff, including scheduling, coordination of work, training, maintaining student records, responding to student inquiries, and referring students to appropriate resources/departments/personnel.
- Supervise, evaluate, and provide training and coaching for the Navigator staff.
- Serve as a Navigator process and system “super user” to provide adequate support and assist with service coverage needs.
- Manage the input of appropriate data into campus service and CRM systems to track usage and content while also informing the knowledge base of those systems with campus content.
- Manage a unit where student records and enrollment, FERPA, Financial Aid and other compliance procedures are followed.
- Ensure that Navigators meet the needs of current and prospective students in a manner that represents the values and strategies of the University and Kansas, enhances student satisfaction, increases enrollment and registrations, continuously increases the knowledge and success of the campus and its programs.
- Stay abreast of student recruitment, inquiry communication, and pertinent one-on-one communication and student service best practices. Transfer that knowledge to Navigator team members, other teams involved in recruitment and student support, and leadership. Disseminate results and learnings of the Navigator efforts.
40% Navigator Service Model Management
- Lead the continual development of the Navigator Service Model that will serve potential students (credit and non-credit) from initial contact and provide for seamless referrals to their appropriate next steps for enrollment. This includes transfer students, online students, graduate students, and continuing education/non-credit students.
- Support inquiring and newly applied students by designing and managing student response strategies based on best practices.
- Collect and compile statistical data requested by campus leadership team, providing reports as needed.
- Promote student retention by demonstrating an understanding of students’ areas of interest and need, university resources, scholarship opportunities, & difficult financial & personal issues surrounding students’ lives.
- Collaborate with enrollment management, marketing, and academic advising to meet the strategic enrollment goals and student success goals of the institution.
10% – Campus Support
- Attend relevant staff meetings and trainings related to Academic Success.
- Provides departmental data relating to service usage and trends, call center statistics and trends, and other relevant strategic information.
- Participate in relevant professional development annually.
5% – Other Duties as assigned by Academic Success Leadership.
