Job Description

This position is part of the School of Computing and Augmented Intelligence (SCAI) graduate academic advising team, within the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering (FSE). Under general supervision, the Graduate Academic Success Advisor is a key contributor to increasing student retention and graduation and supports students in making timely progress toward a degree through a range of in-person, group, and online academic and support strategies and as a part of the team supports student recruitment, academic advising, to prospective and current students. Advisors are also key contributors to supporting student engagement through The Fulton Difference. This position works primarily with our Master’s programs in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Industrial Engineering, and Robotics and Autonomous Systems- Artificial Intelligence with opportunities to work with our PhD populations in the future.

This position is eligible for hybrid work.  Hybrid work is an arrangement where employees spend a minimum of 60% of their regular workweek at their primary ASU work location (Tempe campus). Dean or vice president-level approval is required. 

 Hybrid work may be considered after hire and after training.

Essential Duties

Academic Advising:

  • Interacts  with  diverse  groups  of  faculty,  staff,  students  and  general  public; Interprets and guide students, faculty and staff with adhering to and complying with university, college, school, and program-level academic guidelines, policies and procedures in relation to recruitment, retention, degree progression, and graduation; Plans, develops, and delivers one to one and/or group academic advising through multiple formats (in-person, phone, Slack, Zoom online, etc.);
  • Utilizes PeopleSoft, ASU Analytics, Webextender, My Reports, Amazon Workspaces, GPortal, Salesforce, and internet-based programs to collect, interpret, and present data, generate reports to monitor student recruitment, retention, and general student academic progress;

Communication and Event Planning:

  • Plans, coordinates and delivers program information sessions in person and via live or recorded via Zoom to for student recruitment, retention and yield purposes. Topics for sessions include: new student orientation / welcome programs, thesis/dissertation workshops, graduation verification workshops;
  • Assists with development and maintenance of collateral items such as catalog, handbook, web page content, newsletters, outreach materials and other projects as assigned;
  • Uses strong communication skills both written and verbal to develop and foster University, school, and community relationship/partnerships in support of making effective student referrals to university resources.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree AND one (1) year or more previous experience in one or more of the following: advising, student recruitment/retention or related student services utilizing a proactive and innovative approach which results in demonstrated outcomes in retention, graduation, and academic planning; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Desired Qualifications

  • Evidence of Academic Advising or related experience in a higher education setting
  • Experience working with international student populations is preferred
  • Experience as a strategic thinker and self starter: experience in problem solving, apply critical thinking, and time management skills
  • Experience as a collaborative thinker: Working independently as well as a member of a team.  
  • Evidence of a analytical mindset: organizing, collecting, analyzing and reporting a variety of data in written, verbal and electronic formats.
  • Experience with Peoplesoft, Amazon Workspaces, Analytics, advanced Excel functions 

Evidence of:

  • Master’s degree preferred (in a related area appropriate to this position). 
  • Technology skills in systems such as Peoplesoft, Excel, Canvas, Google Suite, Slack, Salesforce, Outlook, etc.

Working Environment

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse
  • Required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work
  • Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds
  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts
