Job Description

Barrett, The Honors College at the Tempe campus is seeking an Honors Academic Advisor who is able to work in a team environment. Barrett prides itself with offering students attention tailored toward their individual goals and the successful candidate will share this philosophy.  This position will report to the Director of Academic Services and will support initiatives and objectives related to the unique honors college experience.

Essential Duties

  • Primary role is to provide direct student advising to a high volume of honors students on the Barrett curriculum requirements and honors opportunities.
  • Maintain detailed student records by monitoring student progress through systems such as PeopleSoft, DARS, and Salesforce.
  • Actively build knowledge of key university and department resources and opportunities. Share information with new team members and co-workers.
  • Handle general student requests for information and assistance in a positive and proactive manner; escalates urgent/conflicting requests to Honors advising leadership.
  • Provide pre-scheduled and drop-in advising appointments to assist all Barrett students at regular intervals.
  • Share co-curricular opportunities and resources to students which include Barrett exclusive programs, and university-wide initiatives, that match their individual interests and goals.
  • Inform Barrett students of the honors thesis/creative project process through in-person advising, workshops, and online tools.
  • Use and master a variety of technological tools and systems at the same time such as: student record databases, degree progress tools, and appointment systems, with an open and curious approach.
  • Work under direct supervision to support projects and initiatives for Advising and Student Services.
  • Participate in college committees, and attend college and university events including (but not limited to) Convocation, Fall Welcome, Parents Weekend, and academic-related workshops.
  • Complete special projects and other duties as assigned.

DAYS AND SCHEDULE: Monday-Friday 8:00 AM-5:00 PM

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree AND one (1) year or more previous experience in one or more of the following: advising, student recruitment/retention or related student services utilizing a proactive and innovative approach which results in demonstrated outcomes in retention, graduation, and academic planning; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Desired Qualifications

  • Evidence of a Master’s degree preferred; or enrollment in or plans to execute a Master’s Degree.
  • Experience in working with honors or high achieving/gifted students in an academic or related student services field.  (Honors College/Program experience preferred).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of university curriculum requirements and student development theory.
  • Experience in providing care, attention, and exceptional service in one-on-one interactions with students.
  • Ability to be a problem solver who can gather facts and information to resolve issues with the guidance of leadership and proactively build personal knowledge base.
  • Experience in working collaboratively and collegially with the team and outside partners to facilitate comprehensive student support.
  • Experience in being self-motivated and comfortable working within a structured team and assisting in a variety of programs and projects and projects as needed.
  • Evidence of effective communication skills.
  • Experience in using Microsoft Office Applications (i.e. Word, Excel and Outlook); PeopleSoft; data analysis tools

Working Environment

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse; required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work
  • Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds
  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts.
