The College of Medicine, Rady Faculty of Health Sciences (RFHS), University of Manitoba, Canada invites applications for a full-time continuing Academic Lead, MPAS (Master of Physician Assistant Studies program) at the rank of Instructor II or Senior Instructor, commencing August 26, 2024, or at a time to be negotiated. Salary and rank will be commensurate with experience and qualifications, and in accordance with the University of Manitoba Faculty Association collective agreement.

Brief Description
The Academic Lead position is responsible for the development, implementation, and delivery of the University of Manitoba Master Physician Assistant Studies didactic curriculum in consultation with the Program Director, the Medical Director, and under the direction of the Head of the Department of Family Medicine.

The Academic Lead supports the delivery and scholarship of the didactic material delivered in the first year of the Master of Physician Assistant Studies (MPAS) program within the formal rules and regulations of the University of Manitoba. The academic lead is a core MPAS Faculty member. In consultation with their colleagues, appropriate clinical and bioscience departments, the Medical Director and the Program Director, specific responsibilities include supporting the program’s leadership in the development, refinement, and delivery of the MPAS didactic curriculum content delivered in the first year of the program.

The Academic Lead is expected to be influential in course design, course delivery, and evaluation. The faculty member is instrumental in assisting the program to ensure that students consistently meet the program’s student learning outcomes to achieve the competencies required for PA practice and maintain program curriculum assessment in alignment with Accreditation Canada EQual Standards.
Responsibilities include:

Teaching and Instructional
The Academic Lead is responsible for the development, implementation, and delivery of MPAS educational didactic material in the first year of the MPAS program. Incumbents must be able to fill instructional roles with a focus on areas specified in CanMEDS-PA and PA-EPAs competency profile.
1. The Academic Lead regularly meets with students, external stakeholders, program, and medical leadership to review and propose revisions to the Didactic Curriculum in alignment with CanMEDS-PA and PA-EPAs in accordance with the curriculum committee and the internal review process outlined by the Faculty of Graduate Studies.
2. The Academic Lead develops, revises, coordinates, and oversees the assessment tools administered to the PA learner related to the didactic curriculum.
3. Coordinates resources required to administrate all clinically based year one courses including but not limited to: PAEP 7030 Professional Studies, 7052/7054/7056 Patient Assessment I/II/III, 7068/7069 Adult Medicine I/II, 7090 Psychiatry, 7110 Emergency Medicine, 7082 Diagnostic Imaging, 7100 Surgery, 7046 Genetics, 7050 ObsGyne, and 7048 Pediatrics.
4. Incumbent will create and review all assessments completed during the didactic year and identify trends or concerns bringing them to the attention of the Program and Medical Director, Progress Committee, and Academic and Clinical Working Group (ACWG).
5. Maintains, in consultation with faculty advisors and others, ongoing surveillance of PA students’ performance to identify issues requiring referral to the Program Progress Committee in accordance with remediation policy as required.
6. Compiling, in consultation with Program faculty, the Comprehensive Assessment of Clinical Skills (CACS) oral boards exam at the end of the program for approval by the MPAS ACWG chaired by the Program Director.
7. Maintain continuing accreditation requirements of the first year of the MPAS program in collaboration with Program Director.

Service, Staff, and Stakeholder Relations
1. Inform and orient other health professional faculty to MPAS and the PA profession (e.g. Grand Rounds presentations, preceptors).
2. Represent MPAS within the University.
3. Represent MPAS at provincial, national, and international meetings and conferences.
4. Serve on University of Manitoba committees as required including the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences committees and councils and in all regional, provincial, and national organizations as deemed appropriate.
5. Liaise with External Relations on the creation of public relations materials.

Administrative
1. The Academic Lead with the Program Director jointly assesses, evaluates, and implements policy change as needed and in compliance with the Faculty of Graduate Studies and the Department of Family Medicine procedure.
2. The Academic Lead supports and conducts program admissions procedures in compliance with the Faculty of Graduate Studies and the Department of Family Medicine.
3. Member of the Curriculum Committee, and Academic Clinical Working Group.
4. Serve on the Admissions, Curriculum, ad-hoc program, and other University of Manitoba committees as required including the Rady
Faculty of Health Sciences committees and councils.

Scholarship
1. Participate in health professions scholarship and research
2. Participate in continuing professional development
3. Faculty members must maintain their clinical skills and competency.
4. Represent MPAS and the PA profession at provincial, national, and international conferences (CAPA, AAPA, PARSEC, etc.)

Requirements and Qualifications:
• Successful candidates possess current national certification (Canadian, American, or both) as a Physician Assistant.
• Maintain College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba licensure as a physician assistant, and enrollment on the Physician Assistant Registry in the Province of Manitoba.
• Successful candidates have a minimum of 5 years of clinical and PA teaching experience.
• Candidates with PA program academic teaching experience preferred.
