The GME component will include participating on the inpatient teaching service with the Internal Medicine Residency Program at Boca Raton Regional Hospital, one of our GME clinical partners. These duties include:

  • Serve as a teaching attendant for the Internal Medicine residency program, primarily based at Boca Raton Regional Hospital, for 12-14 weeks per year, caring for hospital inpatients from admission to discharge.
  • Maintain clinical competence in the practice of hospital medicine and serve as a role model of a board-certified internist or family medicine hospitalist.
  • Develop a career focus in scholarly activity and develop a portfolio of publications and presentations.
  • Provide 2-3 lectures at the internal medicine residency program Academic Half Day each year, as well as facilitate small-group sessions as the schedule permits.
  • Engage in mentorship of internal medicine residents.
  • Participate in the clinical education of College of Medicine students on their internal medicine clerkships or sub-internships in internal medicine.

Teaching opportunities within the Undergraduate Medical Education (UME) curriculum may include but are not limited to the following activities:

  • Serve as a facilitator/instructor for various components of the Foundations of Medicine courses, which may include Science of Clinical Practice (SCP), Clinical Learning Groups (CLG), Clinical Skills and/or Simulation Center sessions.
  • Serve as a facilitator for PBL, IQ and/or SLIQ groups within the foundational sciences courses.
  • Assess clinical skills of medical students, including scoring student performance during annual Institutional Competency Assessments and/or other OSCEs in Years 1, 2, and 3.
  • Serve as an instructor for the Year 3 Synthesis and Transition course.
  • Serve as an instructor for the Year 4 Transition to Residency course.
  • Conduct Year 3 Academic Half-Day sessions as well as other educational sessions throughout the UME curriculum.
  • Oversee one or more designated curriculum courses, threads and/or content areas aligned with expertise.
  • Engage in medical student mentorship activities.

There are opportunities for scholarly work and quality improvement as well. There may also be other clinical education roles, depending on the candidate’s skills, interest, and other responsibilities. Furthermore, there will be opportunities for growth in academic rank with access to mentorship from senior faculty members in the College of Medicine.

The mission of the Schmidt College of Medicine as a community-based medical school is to advance the health and well-being of our community by training future generations of humanistic clinicians and scientists and translating discovery to patient-centered care. We are committed to providing educational programs, in partnership with our hospital affiliates, that enable our medical students and residents to become active, self-directed, life-long learners; equip our graduates to effectively treat the patients that they are most likely to encounter in their practices; produce graduates with the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and self-awareness required to practice effective, humanistic, patient-centered, evidence-based medicine; emphasize the centrality of collaborative relationships in the provision of the highest quality comprehensive health care; and foster and value collaboration among medical specialties, and between academic medicine and community health care professionals.

Our mission is to produce graduates who are prepared and motivated to play a central role in the achievement of three critical state goals: (1) providing the highest quality health care to Florida’s citizens; (2) assuring that the state has the requisite number of medical faculty required to support Florida’s medical schools and assure continued access to medical education opportunities in Florida; and (3) producing physician-scientists with the knowledge and skills required to become board-certified in internal medicine and embrace lifelong learning.

Minimum Qualifications: • Doctoral degree (M.D. or D.O.) from an accredited institution and credentials that merit appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor or higher is required.

  • A Florida medical license or eligibility for Florida licensure is required.
  • American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) or American Board of Osteopathic Internal Medicine (ABOIM) board certification in Internal Medicine. Applicants with board certification from the American Board of Family Medicine are also eligible to apply, especially if hospital medicine focused.
  • A track record of clinical excellence and experience is preferred.
  • Significant teaching experience with students and/or residents and demonstrated teaching excellence is preferred.
