JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The College of Engineering Advising Center within the College of Engineering at Penn State fosters networks of resources, guidance, and direction to students. We are seeking an innovative, knowledgeable, and collaborative individual to join our team in providing academic advising to first-year and second-year engineering students.

These academic advisers are responsible for serving students in navigating their unique learning experiences and helping them to determine appropriate academic plans. The successful candidate will advise students on the following:

  • Researching and selecting academic programs.

  • Assessing other needs and making professional referrals.

  • Maintaining and ensuring confidentiality of student records.

  • Guiding students in course selection and scheduling.

  • Resolving academic problems and escalating unusual matters.

  • Identifying and monitoring academic progress.

The academic adviser will be expected to give prepared presentations in various college programs such as New Student Orientation, Accepted Student Programs, Spend A Summer Day, Major Nights, and group advising presentations. These positions require interaction with students, parents, faculty, and various college staff members, as well as a comfort with public speaking.

Typically requires a Master’s Degree or higher plus one year related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, for a level 2 position. Applicants with additional experiences may be considered at a level 3. The successful candidate will have a strong background in working with high school or college-aged students, and a proven track record of commitment to serving diverse student populations. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, strong attention to detail, and a desire to work with students in a high-volume center are necessities for success in this position.
