A mechanistic study in catalyzed polycondensations to make sustainable and bio-based polymers

University of Warwick

About the Project

We are now looking for a PhD researcher to join us in October 2023/January 2024 and develop together with an international industrial partner and us an exciting 4-years joint research program in the area of environmentally sustainable polymers.

This specific PhD project will provide a synergistic step-change in the development and understanding of the polymerization mechanisms and kinetics of sustainable green monomers, which can be polymerized by condensation reactions. The aim of the work is to build on current knowledge of polycondensation technology and the exploration of suitable and new catalytic systems to make (preferably) biobased and functionalised polymers. Unravelling the chemical reactions and associated kinetics will allow us to predict the molar mass and chemical composition distributions. This understanding will then be applied to add complexity and functionality to polymer chain architecture. The physical and mechanical characteristics of formulations and products made using these sustainable polymers will also be investigated.

Requirements:

Applicants should have a good honours BSc/MChem/MSc degree (at least II.1 or equivalent) in chemistry or chemical engineering, or other relevant discipline. Some background in polymer synthesis and polymerization kinetics is desired. The 4 year PhD position is open to applicants worldwide. The successful candidate will receive an annual stipend (UKRI level at £18,668 pa for 2023/2024) for the duration of their studies, and fees will be paid at UK home level. For international candidates the difference between home and overseas fees needs to be matched by the candidate.
