2 PhD positions

At the Faculty of Medicine, Department of  Biomedicine, a full-time PhD-position is available for a period of four (4) years or max 4 months after completed the PhD-degree, if this is achieved within a shorter time than four years. The positions include 25 % required duties such as teaching, exam work or supervision, depending on the demands at the department.

The 2 positions are part of the projects “New concepts of protein regulation in health and disease” and “Actin acetylation in cancer metastasis” funded by the University of Bergen.

About the project/work tasks:

• A major aim of the projects is to characterize the molecular functions of human N-terminal acetyltransferases (NATs). NATs couple acetyl-groups to the majority of proteins in a human cell, thus making N-terminal acetylation one of the most abundant protein modifications. • Our research group at UiB (https://www.uib.no/rg/nat) identified and characterized the complete known NAT-machinery in human cells. However, the full functionality of NATs remains to be explored. By further defining these enzymes and their substrates, we may increase our understanding of fundamental cellular processes with a significant impact on human disease. • The main tasks of the Ph.D. fellows will be planning, execution and analysis of research experiments on NAT mediated N-terminal acetylation within the frames of these RCN/UiB-projects. Both standard and advanced methods in molecular biology are needed to carry out the projects. Collaboration with other members of the lab to pursue the larger goals of the projects is required.

Qualifications and personal qualities:

• The applicant must hold a master`s degree or equivalent in molecular biology
• Experience from work with human cell lines and basic molecular biology techniques is demanded
• First-hand experience with microscopy techniques to study proteins in a cellular context and/or mammalian cell behaviour and phenotypes is required
• Experience with protein modifications and protein modifying enzymes is a strong plus
• Work independently and in a structured manner, and have the ability to cooperate with others
• The applicant must be motivated and responsible, and also have a great work capacity and enthusiasm for research
• Proficiency in both written and oral English

Organized research training (PhD program):

The candidate must take part in the University of Bergen approved PhD programme leading to the degree within a time limit of 3 years. You must have admission to the organized research training (PhD program) at the Faculty in order to qualify for the position. Application for admission to the PhD programme, including a project plan outline for the training plan must be submitted no later than three months after the date of commencement.

The PhD-position:
PhD-positions are fixed term positions. You cannot be employed in a PhD-position for more than one fixed term period at the same institution or have had similar employment at an institution in the region.
